Lake Nojiri is located in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, known as the Hokushin area. It is 654 m above sea level, and was the site of human settlements from the Paleolithic Age to the early Jomon Period. Jomon settlements scattered all over Japan are generally found at higher elevations, apparently because the Jomon period was warmer than today.
