Synchronicity and Inevitability

Yosuke Kubozuka moves forward by shining a light on trauma.
Interview with Yosuke Kubozuka, star of the film "Sin Clock" and director Maki.

The film "Sin Clock," which opens in theaters on February 10, is a commercial film based on a completely original screenplay, a rarity in this era. Three young cab drivers with no prospects for success collude with each other, guided by a strange fate, to devise a spectacular plan for a quick turnaround. The twist that awaits them in the end may be a comedy or a tragedy.... The lead role in this film is played by Yosuke Kubozuka, who has been active as an actor for the past few years. In playing the role of the character in this film, which he describes as having "stagnant air," he looks back on the accident in which he fell down the stairs. It was also a confrontation with trauma. What are the traits of an actor that you drew from this trauma? And what kind of person is Kenji Maki, the director who went to such lengths to create this work?

There's a glass slipper somewhere I can wear.

When you stopped your music career and devoted yourself to acting, was that because you would be halfway through if you did both?

Kubozuka:Due to Netflix filming and advertising, we decided that we would not be able to perform live in Japan and London for about 9 months, so we decided to take a break. I had just made a 27-song album, so I felt like I had done all I could do, and I felt like it was okay to take a break. We had been playing for about 10 years in total.

We, the audience, have been eagerly awaiting your return as an actor. Also, the theme of this year's film is "synchronicity," and I somehow think that Mr. Kubozuka will attract a lot of synchronicity.

Kubozuka:I became aware of that word in my early twenties or so, but in fact there was some important message there, and I have been moving forward and living my life as if guided by it. I have never clearly put it into words, but such mysterious things are actually happening all the time behind a single invisible thin wall. As you can see from this work, if you ask me whether I think everything is a coincidence or an inevitability, I am overwhelmingly in the latter camp. . Then, if you ask me why it happens, I think it happens for the sake of betterment.

When I say good or bad, everyone has their own value, so what's good for me may not be good for you, but it's definitely good for me, right? In other words, there is no glass slipper that we can all wear, but there is definitely a glass slipper that I can wear. . and I believe that everything is happening to discover it. I believe that the more seemingly negative and bad things happen and the more we are in a pinch, the more clues we will find to turn things around, and that we can reach success by making errors, as in try-and-error. . If you don't try first, there are no errors. Success can't happen without making errors, and I think that failing badly means that you have the key to great success.

Kubozuka:As KID Yamamoto (Tokuiku "KID" Yamamoto) used to say, once you start watching a match, you are disgusted for a second, but all you do is watch the matches that you lost. He said, "The matches you win are fine because you won, but it's fine to watch the matches you lost and think about why you lost. Otherwise, he said, he won't win the next game.

If I think that things are happening to make us better, stronger, cooler, freer, including things that I don't like, I don't feel extraordinarily angry about coronas, wars, or anything else, regardless of whether they are artificial or random. Of course, when I'm angry, I should be angry. To sound a bit like a Buddhist, I guess it's a good starting point for the idea that we can forgive everything. Well, I think it's a matter of practice to see if you can do it or not.

. It's almost like enlightenment, isn't it? Through the filming of this work, you were able to re-capture the accident of falling down, and in a sense, you were able to re-find your interest as an actor again in this work, didn't you?

Kubozuka:Yes, yes. People often talk about drawers, but an actor's future depends greatly on how many good drawers he or she has, not just small ones.
