feat. LE LABO
A Playlist of Scents and Memories. Ryohei Kamide

In his famous book "In Search of Lost Time," the French writer Marcel Proust developed a story from a fragrance to a folk tale. Nowadays it is called the "Proust effect," but music should have the same effect, so called "nostalgic melodies," and both should reveal a glimpse of a person's individuality. With this in mind, we are starting a Series of playlists based on the theme of fragrance and memories, in cooperation with LE LABO. It will be updated on the last Friday of every month.

Selector15_Ryohei Kamide Scent brings back not only scenes but also emotions.

The 15th and final selector of the Series is video director Ryohei Kamide. For Mr. Kamide, who travels around the world, scent is the sense most strongly connected to memory among the five senses. We asked him to talk about the relationship between fragrance and memory while reflecting on his own memories.

PROFILE

Ryohei Kamide

Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1989. Video director and producer. He planned, shot, and edited all aspects of "Hyper Hardboiled Gourmet Report," and published his first novel, "Bousanroku" (Kodansha) in November 2023.

You selected "BAIE19". What did you like about this fragrance, which expresses the wet feeling after the rain?

[Claire] Le Labo.BAIE 19 ¥29,700[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of December 22, 2023
BAIE 19 expresses petrichor, the unique fragrance associated with the first rain after a long period of sunshine. Dried juniper berries, patchouli, green leaves, cade, musk, and other ingredients express the unique wet sensation that the rain-soaked earth gives off.

It was very close to the smell of something. I don't know if it was a childhood memory, or the scent of a trip with my family, or what, but I do remember it. I am sure that as I use it, there will come a time when I will suddenly remember it. I chose this fragrance because I was looking forward to it.

So there was a sense of nostalgia.

That's right. Also, I climb mountains, and my favorite moment is the morning after sleeping in a tent, when I step outside and the air rushes into my nose along with the cold. I felt like I was close to that mountain scent.

This episode shows that fragrance and memory are strongly connected in your mind.

Among the five senses, scent is the most strongly connected to memory. I often go to Africa, and when I get off the ramp and smell the aroma, that is the moment I know I am in Africa. The smell of oil, the smell of people's bodies, and so on are all mixed together.

I think that foreign scents are strongly associated with memories.

In terms of memories, I am temporarily back home and living at home for the first time in a while, and the other day I noticed a certain high-brand perfume in the bathroom. It was my mother's perfume, which has been in the house since I was a child, and I used to secretly use it when I went out on dates or to events, like when I was in junior high school. I hadn't found it for a long time, so I took a whiff and felt it evoke feelings I had back then. It was like I was doing something bad, but I couldn't stop being excited, or I was in a sensual mood that was unique to that particular fragrance. I felt that fragrances really do remind me of many things.

What do you think the playlist for "BAIE 19" will be like?

I would like to make a travel playlist of what I usually listen to. I am basically always traveling, and I often listen to music on the way to and from my trips. So I think it will start with songs that get me excited when I leave for a trip, and then gradually move toward the end of the trip.

By the way, what does the "ETAH" on the bottle mean?

It's a secret (laughs). If you know what I mean, you know it's my favorite 4-letter word these days. Imagine all kinds of things.

Selector14_Shohei Yasuda A mountain aroma that reminds me of Denmark.

The fourteenth selector in this Series is Shohei Yasuda, chef and owner of Kabi restaurant in Meguro, Tokyo. He recalls his memories of living in Denmark and the connection between aroma and memory, and how there is also a connection with cuisine. Scent, memory, music, and food. We asked him about the connection between these four elements at his restaurant, which is in the midst of preparation.

PROFILE

Shohei Yasuda

After graduating from a culinary school in Osaka, he went to France. After returning to Japan, he worked at the 2-star restaurant "La Cime" in Osaka. He then worked as sous chef at "Tirpse" restaurant in Shirokanedai, Tokyo, the fastest restaurant in the world to be awarded one star, and then went to Denmark for about a year from December 2015 to become chef at 2-star restaurant "Kadeau". After returning to Japan, he opened "Kabi" in Meguro in November 2017.

Do you like incense, perfume, or anything that smells like perfume?

I burn incense when I am at home. I like sandalwood. I love Japanese inns so much that I want to live in one, and one of the incense used at a ryokan I particularly like was sandalwood, so I use that at home as well.

I think that fragrance and memory are closely connected, just as sandalwood reminds you of your favorite inn.

When I used to work in a restaurant in Denmark, I used to go to the mountains behind the restaurant to pick ingredients. I used to pick pine trees and elderflowers, and the scent of the mountain at that time is deeply connected to my memory. I would walk on the humus and smell the seasonal flowers. I love that mountain scent. I also use mountain scents in my cooking, and since I am from deep in the mountains of Okayama Prefecture, it is also connected to that memory.

Gathering ingredients in the mountains of Denmark sounds really wonderful.

I lived on Bornholm Island, where there was an abundance of food in the summer, but in the winter, the temperature was minus 10 degrees Celsius, and it was very cold, so it was impossible to grow food there. So, the Scandinavian culture of preservation is to gather and preserve various foods in the mountains during the spring and summer, and use them in the winter.

I see. And this is reflected in your current style of cooking?

Yes, there are many aspects that match Japanese cuisine. Japan also has many fermented and preserved foods. That is one of the commonalities. The aroma of fermented food often brings back memories.

The natural fragrance of the selected "JASMIN 17" is very attractive, and it seems to reflect exactly your taste, Yasuda-san.

Yes, I did. I felt it had the scent of a forest, and I chose it because I felt it fit my taste. I like natural scents like this.

[Claire] Le Labo.JASMIN 17 ¥29,700[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of November 30, 2023
This fragrance, packed with the natural fragrant charm of jasmine, has a simple yet unique scent. Musk, sandalwood, and vanilla combine to create a harmony of calm sweetness.

What is the origin of the message "no muss no fuss" engraved on the label?

When I was in Denmark, I found this saying in a restaurant I liked. When I asked what it meant, I was told that it meant "let's relax without being uptight," and I really liked it. So I have been using it as a watchword for "Kabi".

I like the catchphrase "Kabi" and Yasuda-san's personality comes through. What kind of music do you like?

I usually listen to ambient and techno music, but I also get a lot of inspiration from music when I think about food. For example, if there is a DJ set list, the flow of the set list is very similar to the flow of a restaurant course meal. There are ups and downs, ups and downs. So I always think about the food while listening to the music.

What did you think of the playlist associated with "JASMIN 17"?

I went into the mountains in the morning, and as I explored deep into the mountains, it became night. This is the image I had in mind when I created this work.

Selector13_Kotani Mineyoshi Scent is a device that brings back memories.

The 13th Selector of the Series is Mineyoshi Kotani, who is active as a fashion model and writer, and also works with creators in various forms of expression. What do fragrance, memory, and music mean to Ms. Kotani, who loves music and prefers analog media such as vinyl records?

PROFILE

Kotani Miyuu (brand-name of limestone gemstone)

Born in Tokyo in 1991, Omiyu began her career as a model at the age of 14. She also writes essays and collaborates with brands in the hope that sharing what she loves will become a small trigger in someone's daily life. She loves cats and pure coffee shops. Also known as Omiyu.

This Series is about scent and memory.

It's the type of thing I feel very connected to. I often use fragrance as a starting point to elicit memories. For example, there was someone I admired in my 20s who wore rose perfume and vanilla-like sweet perfume, so I still collect the same scents as if I were chasing after that admiration. I still collect the same scents as if I were chasing after that admirer. The scents remind me of that person and give me courage.

For you, fragrance is a device that evokes memories, isn't it? During the selection process, you were torn between "PATCHOULI 24" and "LABDANUM 18. In the end, you chose "LABDANUM 18.

Yes, I think it is! My husband uses Patchouli perfume, and it was a scent that I felt close to because it was used by someone I also have respect for. After much deliberation, I chose "LABDANUM 18." This is not a scent of someone I have fond memories of, but a fragrance that reminds me of a place I like and makes me feel really at home. In that sense, I think this is a fragrance that I came to like by facing my own feelings, rather than the conventional way of choosing a fragrance by thinking about someone else. When I actually tried it, I felt that it blended easily into my skin, and I felt comfortable with it.

[Claire] Le Labo.LABDANUM 18 ¥29,700[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of November 10, 2023
LABDANUM 18, a blend of woody labdanum and animal notes such as civet and castoreum, is a mysterious scent that is both elegantly sweet and powerfully spicy. The quiet and warm fragrance evokes a sense of core strength.

I see that you feel a good chemistry with them. You also like analog records, don't you, Mr. Kotani?

Yes, I like records and collect them. But lately I also really like cassette tapes.

What genre of music do you prefer to listen to these days?

When I listen to it on cassette, I like ambient because it calms me down. It makes my heart feel a little bit chipper. I feel nostalgic, and like the fragrance, it brings back memories. I listen to music on cassette when I want to feel that way.

It depends on the playback device, but there is something lo-fi about the sound of cassettes, isn't there?

Yes, I like the feeling of music playing in my ears that is a bit far away, like the sound of a piano coming from the music room after school, and maybe it is similar to that.

What kind of playlist do you think will emerge from "LABDANUM 18"?

I have never really thought about the connection between fragrance and music, so I am looking forward to this opportunity to listen to such music and think about fragrance. For the playlist, I chose the songs that "LABDANUM 18" is closest to the center of my heart and that I like the most, so I would like to select songs that I listen to on a regular basis. I want to create a playlist with songs I love that I can play in my head as a matter of course.

Selector12_Kosuke Kawamura The fragrance is reminiscent of the encounter in the U.S., which can be said to be the origin of the product.

This is the 12th installment of the Series. This time, the playlist is compiled by Kosuke Kawamura, who continues to be active on the international scene. This is the first time for him to carefully select fragrances. What kind of selection will it be?

PROFILE

Kosuke Kawamura

Born in Hiroshima in 1979. As a collage artist, graphic designer, and art director, he has worked with numerous brands and artists. His roots are in the hardcore punk culture, and his hard-hitting visuals attract people all over the world.

The fragrance you selected this time is THÉ MATCHA 26, right?

[Claire] Le Labo.THÉ MATCHA 26 ¥29,700[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of October 27, 2023
Creamy figs with a hint of vetiver and cedarwood add calmness, while bitter orange brings a sense of exuberance to THÉ MATCHA 26. Easy to apply smoothly, delicate, gentle, and harmonious, the fragrance is more than just a beverage, but is seen as "matcha" with various backgrounds and meanings, and evokes the culture and space of wabi and sabi.

Yes, I did. It was almost the first time for me to choose a fragrance, but when I came to the store and made my selection, I was surprised to find that I liked it. I had a hard time deciding between "THÉ MATCHA 26" and "AMBRETTE 9. I thought you would choose something more stimulating and with a stronger fragrance, but I didn't realize that you liked this kind of sweet fragrance (laughs).

What did you like about it?

I found it to be a very relaxing scent. I genuinely thought it smelled very good, and I wanted to wear it both at home and outdoors. I also thought it smelled a little papery, and I could connect it to my own memories. I think that's how I settled on it.

What did the scent of "THÉ MATCHA 26" remind you of?

For me, scents often remind me of past scenes and places. When I was about 19 years old, I went to the U.S. for the first time and visited the studio of Winston Smith (a legendary collage artist in the U.S. hardcore punk scene), whom I had always admired. It's hard to describe the unique smell of his studio, isn't it? But there was a part of it that was somewhat similar to the smell of my own studio. Thinking about it again, I think it probably comes from the smell of used paper in old books and magazines.

I think you have a lot of old magazines in your possession, and it is interesting that the fragrance of the collage materials is connected to them. It seems to me that fragrance is also connected to creation.

Yes, that's right. I think the scent of "THÉ MATCHA 26" is linked to my memories of the scene and events that took place there, and I felt that it was a familiar and familiar scent to me. In that sense, the scent of "LAVANDE 31" reminds me of my grandfather's house that I smelled when I was a child, and I feel nostalgic. It's interesting how smells can move people's emotions, isn't it?

Yes, that's right! What would a playlist associated with "THÉ MATCHA 26" look like?

Even as I'm putting this on, the atmosphere of the fragrance is changing rapidly, and it's going from papery at first to woody, so I feel it has some duality to it. I think the playlist might be like that. I might be able to make a hard and strong selection from the beginning, or I might be able to make a loose and relaxed selection. It might be a wide range of selections. ...It may turn out to be something completely different while I'm thinking about it (laughs).

I am looking forward to it!

Selector11_Yoko Takahashi Scent is relaxing and private.

August and September are special times of the year when perfumes made for selected cities around the world and usually only available there are available in Japan. During these two months, we will be updating this page more frequently than usual. In this issue, we will bring you an interview with photographer Yoko Takahashi, along with photos.

PROFILE

Yoko Takahashi

Born in 1970 in Kyoto, Japan, he moved to the U.S. in 2010, lived in California, and returned to Japan in 2020. 2021 will see the publication of "SAN FRANCISCO DREAM," a collection of photographs of the Bay Area where he lived for 10 years. He has published many other photographs.

What do you remember when you hear the words "scent and memory"?

I have often heard that fragrances are memorable. I once received a letter that smelled so good that every time I smelled it, I was reminded of the sender. I remember that I realized that fragrance is indeed strongly connected to memory.

Do you have any memories of overseas smells or other things that you remember?

For me, colors are often more memorable than smells. For example, when I first went to China, the air seemed yellow. I think this is reflected in my photographs. When I think of scents, I think of someone or a certain restaurant or a particular little spot. Rather than associating it with some country, it reminds me of the people and places that were there. So I think that for me, fragrance is something that is associated with personal memories and private time.

When you travel abroad, how do you decide on your destination country?

I travel to take photographs, so I go to countries that I have never been to that I would like to visit. Many times I am commissioned to do so, but I also often go to take photographs of my work. Some projects I have been pursuing the subject I want to photograph for a long time, so I sometimes go to the same place many times. That is why I went to Berlin 2 or 3 times every year. Starting tomorrow (the day after the interview), I am going to the U.S. and will stop in San Francisco on the way back.

That's nice! Now, the fragrance you selected this time is "NEROLI 36". What was the point in choosing it?

The clean, fresh scent suited my taste. It smells of plants, or rather, that is what it is, a pleasant, wild, natural scent of grass and flowers. But it was really difficult to make a selection. I had been struggling with it for about a month after I was told about this project.

[Claire] Le Labo.NEROLI 36 ¥29,700[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of September 29, 2023
NEROLI 36" is a fusion of "neroli," another name for orange blossom essence, and a variety of essences including rose, musk, mandarin orange, and jasmine. It is a rich fragrance that is refreshing, calm and gentle, and gives a warm feeling.

I see that you prefer a clean, fresh scent.

I like scented things and buy them to try different things. As for herbs, I like rosemary and sage. I also like the smell of frankincense and lavender. I don't like smoky scents when it comes to things I wear on my body, and I prefer fresh scents of grasses and flowers. I also like citrusy and sour scents. I think that's how it fits with NEROLI 36.

The label is "2309 Woolsey st.

This is the address of Berkley when I lived in the US for the first time. I wanted something to commemorate the occasion. I really wanted to use the glasses symbol! (Laughs).

Do you have a scent that you wear when you are working, such as when you are taking pictures?

I am so immersed in the work that I don't put anything on while I am working. I am so focused that I don't care about anything else. That is why I use aroma oil or candles when I want to relax. The scent of plants in "NEROLI 36" also seems to calm me down. I am thinking that the playlist will also be relaxing and plant-inspired.

Thank you very much! For Yoko, scent may be a switch to relaxation.

However, I have heard that some people's fragrance lasts longer than others, and some people's fragrance does not. I am constitutionally predisposed to not have a long-lasting scent, so I would like to have more of this good scent. I envy those who have a good fragrance (laughs).

Selector 10_Seijun Kato Music and fragrance are entities to look back on.

August and September are special times of the year when perfumes made for select cities around the world and usually only available there are available in Japan. During these two months, we will have more selectors than usual. This year's selector is Seijun Kato of MONO NO AWARE and MIZ.

PROFILE

Seijun Kato

Born in Hachijojima, he is the guitarist for the band MONO NO AWARE, formed in 2013, and also performs as the acoustic unit MIZ with the band's vocalist and guitarist, Shukei Tamaki.

This Series is about fragrance and memory.

In my mind, fragrance and music are things that allow us to look back and think about the past. With other things, there is a sense that I am trying to immerse myself in memories of the past, which is not to my liking. On the other hand, with music, I can think about the time I heard it, the place, the event, and so on. It naturally brings back memories, and I enjoy that. The same is true of scents; when you suddenly smell a scent that you remember, it brings back memories with a rush. The fact that I can't explain what it is exactly is also what makes scents and memories interesting.

Do you find that fragrance has any influence on the music you create?

Yes, there is. I value such a sense, especially for MIZ. I am conscious of the presence of fragrance as an atmospheric sensation, even if it is not concrete, and I hope that the song will bring back memories associated with the fragrance when I hear it. For example, the smell of asphalt after the rain reminds me of my hometown on Hachijojima Island.

As you say, the smell of asphalt after rain is somewhat nostalgic.

That's right. In my case, I associate it with the scenery of my hometown, but if it were someone else, something different would come to mind, and that is the most interesting thing about fragrances. The same fragrance can make you think of something completely different, or even the same thing. I think such ambiguity is good.

We asked you to select your favorite fragrance from the "City Exclusive" series, which will be available in Japan only in September and will be limited to each city. Among the many city scents lined up, we were surprised that you chose "GAIAC 10," which is a Tokyo-only scent.

Should I have chosen something from another city? But it felt most natural to me, and that was interesting to me. It made me think that Tokyo was a good fit for me. I like Paris as a city, though.

Did your tastes in fragrances match?

Yes, I like to use a scent that is woodsy and relaxing. I like woodsy, relaxing scents, and since it was GAIAC 10, I naturally selected the Tokyo fragrance because of my preference. I have never been in the habit of wearing or carrying a fragrance every day, but now that I have learned about Le Labo's fragrance, I think I will try it in the future. I decided to use this encounter as a good opportunity.

[Claire] Le Labo.GAIAC 10 ¥45,100[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of September 22, 2023
GAIAC 10, a Tokyo-only fragrance, is a delicate scent of GAIAC wood and cedar wood with a hint of four types of musk. It accompanies the skin day and night, regardless of mood. The special touch that is usually unavailable in other cities is also appealing.

So, what kind of playlist did you make from this scent?

Rather than trying to create a Tokyo-inspired playlist, I tried to create a playlist that would make you feel relaxed and warm.

Thank you very much. Please tell us about your activities, how are both MONO NO AWARE and MIZ doing?

The band is traveling all over the country, playing gigs all over the place. I am also working on productions for both of them at the same time. I am quite active, and although I am busy, I am enjoying my time.

Besides music, is there anything you are passionate about as an individual?

It is a small thing, but when I can make it, I make lunch boxes. Even though I am busy, I want to make sure that my family has a good diet, and cooking itself is fun.

By the way, what is your favorite dish?

Hot pot with hot spices. I like hot pot. I mix various ingredients and use spices. I often make it because it can be left over and is delicious no matter what you put in it. I make many other dishes, but that is the one that comes to mind.

I'd love to try it.... Please tell us about your cooking next time!

Selector 09_Kouga Kasun Memories of people and towns brought back to life by scent.

August and September are a special time of year when perfumes and city exclusives, which are made for selected cities around the world and usually only available there, are available in Japan. During these two months, we will update this page with increased frequency. The selector this time is Ms. Kasumi Kouga, designer of KOWGA.

PROFILE

Kouga Kasumi

She is the designer of the women's brand "KOUGA," which was launched in the 2021 Fall/Winter season, and is also in charge of PR for the brand "MAGIC STICK," created by Naotaka Konno. He is in the limelight as a creator who will pioneer the next generation.

Do you have any connection between your memories of travel and fragrance?

After all, there is something about the scent of a foreign country that is recalled when you arrive at your destination. This was my second trip to Korea, and I stayed at the same hotel as the first time. The hotel's scent had a strong impact on me, and the moment I entered the hotel, I thought, "Oh, I remember that smell," and I remembered my first trip to Korea.

I think that sometimes the scent of a destination can evoke memories even if words cannot explain them.

That's right. I think the smells of the places where we stay and the stores we go to are especially memorable, and when the same smells waft through the air, I can picture that moment in my mind. Then there are the smells of other people's cars. I think the smell of a car is memorable because it is unique depending on the owner. I remember it together with the memories of the owner of the car.

By the way, did you know about Le Labo?

Of course. I have been using "SANTAL 33" fragrance for a long time, and I also love "PALO SANTO 14", a candle given to me as a gift by a friend. I also use "BODY CREAM HINOKI". I find that I have a lot of them around me (laughs). I think this is one of the charms of the "Le Labo" brand, because it is a brand that people are happy to receive as gifts, and I am also happy when I receive them.

City Exclusives," which are usually unavailable in Japan and limited to each city, are available only once a year, in September. This year, the Shanghai fragrance "MYRRHE 55" has been newly added to the lineup.

This time, we asked you to try the "City Exclusive" series, which will be available in Japan only in September and will be limited to each city. The one we selected is "MUSC 25," which is an LA fragrance.

Yes, I did. First, I picked out a few countries from the perspective of where I wanted to visit, and the scent of "MUSC 25" reminded me of the magnificent landscapes of LA. I had been there once before, and it reminded me of that time. I chose this fragrance because I wanted to wear it the next time I visit LA for fun. Also, the cool and refreshing scent was perfect for my taste. I think it is just the scent I want to wear now.

[Claire] Le Labo.MUSC 25 ¥45,100[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of September 8, 2023
MUSC 25 is usually sold exclusively in LA. In addition to musk, vetiver, ambergris, and civet are used to create a dualistic fragrance that is both soapy and clean with an animalic nuance.

The playlist you created for us this time is also very summery and cool.

That's right. I selected what I would listen to in L.A., and I put it together while imagining the scene of people playing with "MUSC 25" on. Scent and music have something in common, don't they? I tried to tie this scent to the playlist so that it would be a playlist that would remain in my memory.

Selector 08_Okamoto Reiji (OKAMOTO'S) Impression of fragrance directly related to people.

August and September are special months when perfumes and city exclusives, which are made for selected cities in the world and usually only available there, are available in Japan. During these two months, we will update this page with increased frequency. Our selector this time is Mr. Reiji Okamoto.

PROFILE

Okamoto Reiji (OKAMOTO'S)

Drummer of the band OKAMOTO'S, YAGI organizes parties and exhibitions on an irregular basis. He is connected to various fashion and subculture scenes, and is always creating new and innovative ideas.

When was the last time you traveled abroad?

I was in LA for 2 weeks last November, I think.

You went to the United States. What do you remember about the trip and the scent?

It has a coconut-like smell of deodorant, which is unique to the United States. I think it has a slightly nose-irritating scent that is very L.A.-like. When I actually wear it, I feel very American (laughs). (Laughs.) Also, when I am walking in Shibuya, I feel like I am abroad when I smell the mixture of alcohol and garbage that wafts through the air as I enter the back alleys of the city. It's not a good smell at all, but for me, the stinkier it is, the more memorable it is. It's like the smell of people.

I see that you associate fragrances with people rather than scenes.

That's right. Three or four years ago, I received a kit that allowed me to try several kinds of products, and when I smelled "Santal 33," I thought, "That smells like my friend Aisho Nakajima! I was like, "That's my friend Aisho Nakajima's scent! I could picture Aisho Nakajima's sexy image in my mind and connected it to "SANTAL 33". I wanted to be just like him, so I decided to use the same scent. I asked him about it, and he said he was using Le Labo's "SANTAL 33," so I told him I had chosen the same one. Since then, we have been working together as Team SANTAL.

[Claire] Le Labo.SANTAL 33 ¥26,950[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of August 25, 2023
SANTAL 33" is a representative of "Le Labo". This unisex fragrance combines the spicy and woody scent of sandalwood, cedar, leather, and cardamom with the sweetness of violet, iris, and amber.

I didn't know that was the case (laughs). Have you always used only "SANTAL 33"?

No, I was using "THÉ NOIR 29" because I liked it, but I found out later that my partner who works with me in YAGI also uses it. Since it was quite unpleasant to be wearing the same fragrance as him, I decided to choose a different fragrance. So, before I knew it, there were many people around me who were using "Le Labo".

Did you always like perfume?

I used to not wear it, but now it has become a habit. Wearing perfume has become a part of my daily life. Besides, there is nothing better than smelling good. I want people to say, "I just passed Reiji Okamoto and he smelled really good" (laughs). (Laughs) In fact, since I started wearing "SANTAL 33," people have been saying to me, "You smell really good. I think that the fact that I smell good means that I am giving people around me a good promotion even if I am not conscious of it.

I think that's a very unique opinion of Mr. Rage, who remembers people from their scents.

Yes, I do. I usually get the "Who is that smelling!" I often think, "This is who I am smelling! I had a great icon in my mind, Aisho Nakajima, and because I connected with her, I had a positive impression of her, and I wanted to use her as well.

The label says "Calorie hikaeme". Does it mean that you are trying to reduce calories?

That's right (laughs). The other day, I was amused by a sports drink that said "low in calories" on it (laughs). I don't have any deep reason for it, but I thought it was funny. It's true that it's good to be moderate in everything, but it's not zero. I thought it was a good word that conveyed such a sense of modesty, and I wanted to make it my motto.

I didn't realize that was your motto. Now, please tell us about the playlist you are going to create for us. How do you think it will turn out?

I guess I would have to go with my own image of Aisho Nakajima. Slow and sweet R&B, sexy and luxurious, yet somehow reassuringly familiar. This is the kind of playlist I would like to make. Enjoy.

Selector 07_Fumiaki Uchida With humidity and lingering scents.

August and September are a special time of year when perfumes made for select cities around the world and usually only available there are available in Japan. During these two months, we will update this page with increased frequency. The selector this time is Fumiaki Uchida of FUMIKA_UCHIDA.

PROFILE

Bunkyu Uchida

After working as a buyer for the vintage store Santa Monica, he and his wife opened JANTIQUES in Nakameguro in 2005, and has been working on his own brand, Fumika_UCHIDA, since 2014.

Do you have any memories that are connected to fragrance from your travels?

The first time I went to the U.S. was when I was working in Santa Monica, and I will probably never forget the smell I smelled at the L.A. airport. It was a spicy smell that I had never smelled before, and I knew I was in a foreign country. I felt like I was in a foreign country. I was suddenly sent to the airport by myself, and I remember the feeling of nervousness I had when I first arrived there. I remember it more intensely from my sense of smell than from my sense of sight.

It is indeed stuck in my mind.

I also go abroad every year for purchasing. There is a flea market that is held entirely on grass, and I like the unique smell that the grass gives off in the early morning when it becomes humid. I like the smell of humidity. I also like the smell of Tokyo at night when the daytime heat has eased off.

Tokyo summers are very humid, aren't they?

I love this time of year when summer doesn't seem to end. In the fashion industry, it's the time of year when we have to end the season, and the sadness of having to cut it short and start fall/winter while summer is still going on. I look back on that season with the feeling of wanting to enjoy this summer until the end. I like freshly applied perfume, but when I forget about it, I get a very emotional feeling when I smell the perfume I put on in the morning.

I think it's not so much the beginning, but the moment you feel afterwards that moves you.

Yes, that's right. The smell of a match being extinguished, or the smell of a fire on your body when you go into your sleeping bag, or the smell of chlorine on your way home from the pool when you were a child. I like scents that I feel when I am not conscious of them, where there is a time lag rather than an on-time scent. I think I am conscious at the moment I put on the perfume, but when I forget that, when the scent comes back to me, that is probably the moment when my emotions move.

You chose "PATCHOULI 24" this time, didn't you?

I like peculiar scents that don't go down easily, rather than nice scents that go in quickly. I have been using Patchouli perfume since I was in my twenties. Having worked in fashion, I like to change my clothes every day, and I like to be different. But I thought that by wearing the same scent, people would remember me. I was torn between "ROSE 31" and "PATCHOULI 24," but I decided to go with "PATCHOULI 24" because I thought it would be a good first choice.

PATCHOULI 24 has a smoky scent of patchouli, birch, and leather. Behind the solid and deep fragrance, there is also a sweetness of vanilla and violet, as well as a soft roundness. A unique fragrance with calmness and warmth.

The word "permeate" on the label means "to permeate.

I have been wearing the scent of patchouli all my life, so I thought, simply, I wish my body odor was patchouli (laughs). (Laughs) I wanted it to soak into my body, and I also wanted it to be a part of my love for patchouli. This time, I realized once again that perfume is a delicate thing, and my patchouli range has broadened.

You also made a playlist, how did you like it?

Actually, I have never made a playlist before, and this is the first time I have done so, but I thought it was similar to building a fashion season. I have collected songs that I like to listen to every day, but rather that I am interested in. I'm looking forward to finding out how this list came to be over time.

You have a lot of songs by American artists.

It was not so much the first time I listened to the music, but more a process of facing my inner self, like drawing out something I had known for a long time but had forgotten. In this season, I felt like I was on my way home from work with the windows and roof of my car fully open, listening to music and feeling the humidity of late summer and the change in the air. I thought of that feeling in conjunction with the fragrance of this perfume.

So that's why you chose rock and jazz.

It's kind of embarrassing! I don't know that much about music, so I felt very embarrassed because it was like I was showing you something more private than looking at my closet (laughs).

Selector 06_BIGYUKI I want to create music with a strong impression like PATCHOULI 24.

August and September are a special time of year when perfumes made for select cities around the world and usually only available there are available in Japan. During these two months, we will update this page with increased frequency. First, we asked Mr. Bigyuki, who was in Japan on tour in March, about his memories of "Le Labo.

PROFILE

BIGYUKI

A musician who works as a keyboardist, composer, and arranger. Based in New York, he is active in a variety of genres from the jazz scene to R&B and hip-hop.

When did you move to New York?

I came to the U.S. in 2000, so I have been living in the U.S. for 23 years now. My university was in Boston, and I started traveling back and forth between New York and Boston around 2007, and then moved to New York in the late 2000s.

And you tour all over the world from New York, don't you? How much time do you spend abroad each year?

I think I'm out half the year. But since the tour stopped because of the Corona disaster, I stayed at home during that period, and I thought to myself that I should be able to enjoy my life at home as well (laughs). (Laughs) Because I was constantly on the road, I felt like I was going home to sleep.

After being abroad for such a long time, it seems that coming back to Japan is no longer a homecoming, but a kind of journey.

In the beginning, coming to Japan to perform was part of the trip. I thought of Japan as a place where I could stretch my wings, where they would take me to good food and fun places to play. Recently, however, I have been thinking about what kind of relationship I should build with Japan if I am to continue living in the United States. I believe that what I have gained in the U.S. is unique, and I have come to want to share my experiences and ideas with the younger generation in Japan.

It seems that Bigyuki, who is always traveling, has a unique way of thinking and philosophy.

While performing live, I would like to conduct workshops in the future and create opportunities for dialogue with the younger generation in Japan. I think it is difficult for Japanese people to go abroad. However, if you stay in Japan for a long time, you may not realize that what you take for granted is actually not the norm. You don't have the opportunity to think about such things or come into contact with things that are different from the norm. I am hoping that this will be an opportunity to broaden their view of the world.

In terms of the city, I understand that you often use Yoyogi Uehara as your base when you come to Tokyo.

That's right. Whenever I go to a new city on tour, the first thing I do is look for a coffee shop. Many musicians like to drink, and everyone has different tastes and preferences, but in the end, coffee is where they end up. It requires preparation, and the process of making it is like a ritual, but at the end of the day, you can enjoy the taste and aroma. I believe that coffee is not simply something to drink or eat, but something to enjoy the entire process. That is why all musicians are coffee lovers. In Yoyogi Uehara, there are many good coffee shops such as "Little Nap" and many friends I have made there. It has become one of my favorite towns.

I know you spend a lot of time touring around the world.

In my case, it is the sound of people walking in a crowded place. For example, in Prague in Europe, for example, the scaffolding is cobblestone, so people walk very fast, and bicycles seem to fly from various places. Each city has its own order, but from an outsider's point of view, it seems chaotic. Tokyo is the same way. People who are used to it may take it for granted, but for me, it is chaos. If I were in New York, I would naturally recognize it. The city and the tempo of walking are most closely connected. In an environment where many people live, it is difficult to find a unique scent, because there are so many different smells in the air.

So, the scent of a city is something that is etched in your memory along with the scenery?

That's right. That is exactly what I was told at Le Labo about "BAIE 19" at [Le Labo], you said it was inspired by the wet feeling after a rain. That's what I was thinking of. Scent is also a kind of memory, so I don't think we should focus only on that. I think scent is one of the things we remember, such as information from our ears and the scenery we see.

How about during the performance?

I have never really thought about it, but I suppose it depends on the size of the venue. For my personal taste, I prefer a place where I can directly feel the heat of the audience and the smell of living things fills the room. I guess you could call it a space like a sauna.

By the way, the name "Le Labo" was mentioned earlier, but you are a regular customer of theirs, aren't you?

You have been using it for a long time! I first learned about it about 15 years ago. I was on a tour in San Francisco, and the hotel amenity was "Le Labo. I used the shampoo, and it smelled so good and felt so good. I tried the shampoo, and it smelled so good and felt so good that I just remembered the name and went back to New York. I was walking around Soho thinking, "I really liked that scent," when I found the store and thought, "There it is! (Laughs). (Laughs). At that time, I finally learned that it was a fragrance brand that originated in New York.

PATCHOULI 24 has a smoky scent of patchouli, birch, and leather. Behind the solid and deep fragrance, there is also a sweetness of vanilla and violet, as well as a soft roundness. A unique fragrance with calmness and warmth.

What a coincidence! What did you like about the perfume you selected this time, "PATCHOULI 24"?

When I went to the Le Labo store to ask about this project, the first question I asked was about the most peculiar fragrance. The first question I asked when I went to the Le Labo store for this interview was the most peculiar fragrance. The clerk told me that it was peculiar and that there were different types of people who liked and disliked it, and I felt a mysterious rivalry with her. (Laughs.) In my own music, too, I want to perform in a memorable way, with a somewhat poisonous flavor that makes people who like it peculiar, and I think that our orientations were linked.

Is the playlist still arranged that way?

I put on "PATCHOULI 24" on days when I have a live concert to get into the mood. The unique aroma makes my brain feel excited. You enter the zone. Gradually, your senses become familiar with the scent. The euphoric feeling increases while maintaining a sense of tension. After the performance, you are immersed in the afterglow. I made this playlist while imagining the flow of the fragrance and the performance.

Selector 05_Lee Izumida & Kanade Serada Scent that creates a sense of security in the home.

For our fifth installment, we interviewed Izumida Lee and Kanohiro Serada, a couple who both use Le Labo products. We interviewed the couple, who both use Le Labo products, about fragrance and memory at their home.

PROFILE

Right: Lee Izumida

Left: Kanade Serada

Director of "Heaven's Omotesando" and hairdresser. He is also involved in a wide range of activities, such as working on numerous contents for men's fashion media.

What do you remember when you hear the words "memories related to fragrance"?

Lee:It reminds me of the smell that a city has. I usually visit various places, but Tokyo, Paris, and New York all have the atmosphere created by the people who live in each city, and I am reminded of that.

Kanadei:We sense the season by the smell of plants, such as a golden osmanthus, when we are walking in the city. In summer, I smell something exciting. I am also a hairdresser, so I can't help but remember the smell of perm solution and the like. I also remember the playlist that was playing in the store. I think that unique smell puts me in a work mode. I think scents can switch our mood and remind us of a season or a scene.

Lee-san, do you have any memories of music and scent sets like Kanadei-san?

Lee:In my case, I play music when I paint, and sometimes the smell of the paint and the music are linked. So, when I hear a certain music, I remember the painting I was doing with it as background music, or I remember what I was doing at that time. Sometimes those are good memories, sometimes not so good (laughs). The combination of music and fragrance is a device that strangely evokes memories like that.

You and your husband usually use Le Labo fragrances, don't you?

Lee:Yes, I do....and I'm not sure if it's a good idea...! But I just spray perfume in my closet on my own, so I guess I can't say we both love it....

Kanadei:I don't use perfume on a daily basis. So I don't notice it being sprayed on my clothes unless I am told.

All:LOL.

Kanadei:Having said that, I think this "ANOTHER 13" is a nice fragrance. After all, we all have our tastes.

Lee:Yes, I know their preferences, so I try not to use scents that they might not like. In perfumes, I use "GAIAC 10" as a perfume, and I use different fragrances depending on my mood. I also use "SANTAL 33" shampoo and conditioner, and I love using Le Labo products, including face scrubs.

This fragrance was created in collaboration with the British fashion and culture magazine "Another Magazine". Animal musk, jasmine, and ambrette seed absolute are softly scented to create a unisex fragrance with an urban freshness.

What do you like about Le Labo?

Lee:I like the fact that perfumes are refillable, and I like the fact that I can continue to use them by changing the label with an original message on it. I am attracted to the idea of using something for a long time.

You chose the message "ittassyai to okaeri" for the label of "ANOTHER 13.

Lee:I do not carry perfume with me when I go out, such as when I travel. Therefore, this scent is positioned as my "home scent. I wear it when I go out, and when I come back, I feel relieved to smell the same fragrance. This is why I chose this message.

Kanadei:I see. So you intentionally used perfume in your closet or in your house.

Lee:Yes, yes!

So, how did you come up with the playlist for this year's event?

Lee:When I imagined this "ANOTHER 13" scent = the smell of home, I thought it would be nice to have a playlist that connects to our marriage. So, I gathered 15 of my favorite love songs that I played at our wedding party and that I chose now while remembering those days. I think it is quite difficult to plan a wedding, so if anyone likes the songs, I would be happy if they use them at their own wedding or if they are useful to someone else!

Selector 04_miu The smell of winter reminds me of the soothing snowy landscape.

The fourth playlist was created by MIU. We asked her what she thinks about fragrance while having her choose a fragrance at a store.

PROFILE

miu

Born in 1996. Born in Shiga Prefecture. She is active as an actress and model and can be seen in various media. Her favorite things are music and ramen noodles.

This Series is based on the theme of "Fragrance and Memory," and I was wondering if you could tell us about your "Fragrance and Memory" story.

I have two slightly emotional stories. When I was a child, I used to go to a ski camp about twice a year. The smell of the mountains in winter still lingers in my mind, and I remember it in the winter. I remember that memory in the winter. It's a bit like a twang in my nose. That is the first one.

The cold aroma unique to winter reminds you of snowy mountains, doesn't it?

That's right. I also go mountain climbing, but I like winter so much that I go to the mountains a little early to feel the winter. I did that last year.

Do you climb mountains often?

I do! I used to go to mountains with a high degree of difficulty, but these days I tend to go to rather easy-to-climb mountains. I go to enjoy the snow in winter, or go to a meeting to anticipate the spring season. The scenery in the mountains is totally different from that of the city. I go there with the sense of anticipating the season.

So, what is the other memory?

Now, talking about the city, I like the smell of asphalt when it has stopped raining and the sun is shining, and the air is about to become thirsty. I like the feeling of cleanliness after the dust and other particles in the air have been washed away. It also reminds me of when I was a small child, or of my ordinary daily life.

It is true that asphalt on a rainy day has a unique aroma, doesn't it?

Scent often reminds me of something or makes me think about something. I take Shigeru (MIU-chan's dog) for a walk twice a day, morning and evening, and it's fun to walk through residential areas at dinner time. Oh, I smell boiling potatoes, so I wonder if it's going to be curry? Or maybe meat and potatoes? I used to be really into that kind of dinner guessing game.

The smell of food wafting through the air as you walk down the street is really pleasant, isn't it? Now, you chose "FLEUR D'ORANGER 27" at Le Labo. What were the key points in choosing it?

[Claire] Le Labo.FLEUR D'ORANGER 27 ¥26,950[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of June 2023
FLEUR D'ORANGER, which means "orange blossom 27". It has the nobility of an orange blossom with fresh lemon and other ingredients. Bergamot and petitgrain round out the fragrance, and musk gives it a bitter edge, making it a perfect scent for spring and summer.

The scent of orange blossom gave me a gentle feeling. The perfume I am using at the moment is quite austere and gives a hard impression, so I thought it would be nice to have something lighter and more lighthearted by contrast. I have always liked the smell of plants and fruits, so I really liked it. If I use it when I play outside, it might give people around me a fresh impression.

What kind of playlist do you have in mind for "FLEUR D'ORANGER 27"?

I like to make playlists. I like to create soothing playlists that I can listen to when I am climbing a mountain to lift my spirits.

The message engraved on the label is "♨︎☮♨︎", which is very unique.

It's like a healing type of thing. I put the atmosphere I felt from the fragrance in symbols. when I do DM or LINE, I often use ♨︎ instead of ♡. It's kind of cute. I like it because it gives a peaceful feeling.

Selector 03_Ryo Takaiwa The scent of roses overlaps with jazz standards.

This month's selector is Ryo Takaiwa. She traces her memories of the aroma through "Le Labo" at her whisky bar "Brother".

PROFILE

Ryo Takaiwa

A genuine entertainer born in the Heisei era, he is the front man of SANABAGUN. and a solo jazz singer. He is also the owner of "Brother," a whisky bar in Sangenjaya where adult delinquents hang out.

When I smell the aroma of whiskey, it reminds me of the past, and I also think about music. It's half of my business now, but the scent of whiskey has always been with me. In terms of scents that are associated with memories, I would say the sea breeze at the seaside. When I smell the sea, I instantly remember the port of Miyako, Iwate, which is also my hometown. That fresh, alive feeling. That is what the scent symbolizes for me. It is connected from that sea to the present. It is also something fundamental.

I have a good nose because of my blood. So I am always concerned about whether or not my smell will make others feel uncomfortable. Perfume is a man's way of grooming himself when he meets people. I don't necessarily use perfume every day.

I also use perfume when I want to tighten up. Especially when there is a live concert. It puts me in fighting mode when I go on stage. Perfume may also have that effect. Well, I don't feel like a fighter on the jazz stage (laughs). (laughs) Even so, there is a sense of a natural switch that switches you on and off. An invisible scent can change your mood. It is important to change your mood when you are on stage.

[Claire] Le Labo.ROSE 31 ¥26,950[50ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *As of June 2023
ROSE 31" is a woody and spicy fragrance with cumin, cedar, amber, gaiac wood, cistus, and other ingredients that give it the rich scent of roses from Grasse in the south of France. The elegant fragrance with a low sweetness can be used by both men and women.

[Claire] Le. I recently learned about "Le Labo," and I really liked the brand's overall worldview. I was very happy to know that they mix fragrances on the spot after you have chosen a scent at the store, and I felt that their fragrances are tailored to the lifestyle of the user. I have used a variety of perfumes in the past, and have actually put them in my lyric, but Le Labo is also a must for me in the future. I have used a variety of perfumes in the past and have actually included them in my lyric, but I think Le Labo may become an indispensable standard for me in the future.

We selected "ROSE 31". When you hear the word "rose," do you think it is too suitable for Takaiwa because of its sweet and mellow fragrance? No, we decided to go with a straightforward "on a dare" selection, including that. It was my personal favorite fragrance to begin with. It is an old standard that any jazzman can play, and it is the theme of the movie of the same name, "Days of Wine and Roses. It is the theme song from the movie of the same name, Days of Wine and Roses, about a gentleman and a lady whose family is destroyed by alcoholism, and I thought it was a great song. I thought it was a good song, and for a while I thought I wouldn't play it because everyone else was playing it, but lately I've definitely been singing it. That's why I chose "ROSE I chose "ROSE 31" for that reason. I also have a tattoo of a rose, so it's perfect, right?

If I had to make a playlist from there, I would probably focus on "Days of Wine and Roses," jazz standards, R&B, and music that I like to sing to. I would select jazz standards, R&B, and music that I love and have sung to, with "Days of Wine and Roses" as the core of the playlist. I've also chosen a song from Disney, which I love, but this time it's from "Sleeping Beauty," which I think is very "ROSE 31" is like "ROSE 31," isn't it? Rose is the key word.

The label reads "JAZZ LIFE" surrounded by a crown. This has been my motto for a long time. It is a stance of jazz. Not only as a musical expression of jazz, but also as an attitude. Jazz is my way of life. The playlist I made this time may also show such an attitude.

Selector 02_Cota Mori If we think without "Le Labo," most of our memories would be lost.

The playlist this time is led by Koudai Mori, who has been using "Le Labo" for more than 10 years. We will explore his memories of Le Labo.

I have been using Le Labo for more than 10 years now. In fact, I have never bought any perfume other than Le Labo. The first one I bought was "OUD 27" and I loved it for a long time, but when it was discontinued a few years ago, I was in despair (laughs). (Laughs.) Then I found out that refills were still available, and I continue to use it while adding new ones.

The inscription on the label "my fav" already means exactly what it says. It means "my favorite. I have been using it for a long time, and every time I push it, it reminds me of something. Various scenes come to my mind. It's very strange because I wear it every day and it brings back memories like that. To put it bluntly, if it weren't for the Le Labo fragrance, I wouldn't have any memories at all. If it weren't for the Le Labo fragrance, my memories of the past 10 years...well, I would probably lose almost all of my memories (laughs).

Although now discontinued, "OUD 27" has a passionate fan base and is an animalic fragrance with notes of oud, cedar, patchouli, gaiac, and vetiver. The OUD 27 bottle is available exclusively to those who own a bottle of "OUD 27" at Le Labo. The refill service is available exclusively for those who own a bottle of "OUD 27" at Le Labo stores with their own laboratories.

Another one I have used for many years is the PATCHOULI 24. I also use this one with refills. OUD. 27" is another one, but both have a smokiness and weirdness to them, and I love the way the fragrance develops to the point where I feel it tells a story. I often burn incense at home, and since I was a child, I have always liked the smell of bonfires, wine corks, and other peculiar smells. I have always wanted to find a perfume because I like the smell itself, but I couldn't find anything that made me feel that kind of austerity.

If I had to pick a strong difference, I would say that "OUD 27" has flamboyance and danger in its smokiness, while "PATCHOULI 24" has austerity and more complex transitions. I don't intentionally use them differently, but in summer I use "OUD 27" in summer and "PATCHOULI 24" in winter.

[Claire] Le Labo.PATCHOULI 24 ¥33,000[100ml](Le Labo Customer Service) *Refill amounts as of April 2023
PATCHOULI" has a smoky scent of patchouli, birch, and leathery 24". Behind the solid and deep fragrance, there is also a sweetness of vanilla and violet, as well as a soft roundness. A unique fragrance with calmness and warmth.

I have tried to come up with a playlist that expresses these atmospheres and the flow of each fragrance over time in my own way, taking it as a story. The common threads are that they are smoky and suspicious, and that they are neither very happy nor mournful, but have two sides to them. And they're all a little bit dark and maybe a little bit heavy-handed (laughs).

I also included some nostalgic melodies that remind me of the old days when I listen to this sound, and selected songs that fit my current mood. It is neither negative nor positive, but it is passionate and painful, and I feel that it has become something very typical of me.

As I was creating the playlist, I realized that music has the same function of evoking memories as fragrance. Depending on the music we listen to, we can feel our physical temperature rise or fall. By liking an environment that requires endurance, such as heat or cold, we can even feel comfortable in that environment. It is as if the temperature of the body changes. I thought that sound and scent, which are invisible to the eye but penetrate the body more deeply because of that, have in common the power to awaken memories and the power to love the environment and the situation.

The label of "PATCHOULI 24" is inscribed with the words "Here we go Again. These words express how I am feeling right now. I have gone through many phases in my life, such as my student and freelancer years, and I feel as if another chapter is ending and a new chapter is beginning.

I can't go into too many details, but from here on millennium PARADE is going to be in its element. The time will come when we will be firmly on that creative path, so ah, I'll have to push myself back toward the great hell again. I thought I had climbed up the mountain, but I'm still at the foot of the mountain.... Well, I'm really looking forward to it. If anything, I am the most excited I have ever been. I'm ready to put all the energy I've saved up and start all over again from the very beginning.

Selector 01_Daito Manabe. Scent also has the effect of increasing the value of the work itself.

The first is an interview with Daito Manabe, one of Japan's top creators.

This Series will focus on the theme that fragrance and memory are inextricably linked.

The scent of incense wafting through the clothing store is very memorable. I used to work part-time in a record store, and I have the sensation that memories of that time come back to me along with the fragrance.

What is the most memorable incense?

It was very popular in the late 90's and early 2000's, and was used in the stores of certain brands that represented the street. Even now, I sometimes use it.

Do you find that fragrances have an influence on your creations?

Although the meaning is slightly different from that of perfume, I think that the value of the work itself is sometimes enhanced by the addition of the sense of smell to sight and hearing. That is why I believe that the scent of the exhibition venue is also important. How do we prepare the sense of smell that comes in as an introductory part before the visual and auditory senses? We have a scent coordinator come in, and we consider it to be such an important element.

How about in terms of music and fragrance?

When I was young, I used to gather with friends at my house, make the room dark, burn incense, and listen to music as if we were all meditating. I think there is a strong relationship with music.
