Where Shall We Go Wearing BEAMS VOL.2 SHEN TANAKA (Artist)

Original items from BEAMS are very popular. BEAMS" has a wealth of knowledge gained from American casual culture and a design sense that captures and reflects the current mood. By skillfully mixing these two elements, we create clothes that match the mood of today's people. The director, Motoki Yoshikawa, sets the direction of the brand. In this project, he invites guests whom he would like to meet and takes them to his favorite spots with "BEAMS" clothes. Through these places, we will get to know the personal side of the guests.
This time, we are joined by artist Shen Tanaka. She selected a record shop and a wine store in Shimokitazawa. Ms. Yoshikawa was carried along by the high-spirited Ms. Shen and got into the groove. We walked around Shimokitazawa with the two in high spirits.

The more you know about men's clothing, the more profound and interesting it is .

. This time we came to Shimokitazawa at Mr. Shen's request.

Tanaka:I come to this area often for meals , or just to hang out.

Yoshikawa:Shimokitazawa is within my area of activity , so I come here often.

What kind of image do you have of BEAMS?

Tanaka:There are so many different items, it's like Doraemon's four-dimensional pocket (laughs).

Yoshikawa:We have everything (laughs).

Tanaka:As for the originals, they are made of the right quality, in seasonable items that I want to wear now. Even items that would be out of reach for brand-name items are offered at a price range that suits me.

Yoshikawa:We are trying to cover the entire generation from the late teens to the older generation, and we are pursuing a kind of diversity as well. However, each age group has a different era and sense of values, and what is demanded of them changes as well. We are developing original items with various considerations in order to respond to these changes.

However, we don't try to do everything. We are basically based on American casual, so we try not to blur that line.

Tanaka:The more I learn about men's clothing, the more profound and interesting it becomes. Women's clothing has a wide range of designs, but men's clothing has rules, and I feel that men's clothing tries to create something unique by finding gaps in the rules. I feel like a great detective when I find those particulars (laughs).

. Today, you chose the MA-1 from "BEAMS".

Tanaka:MA-1 is a classic, but I was curious how "BEAMS" would design it , so I picked it up.

Yoshikawa:This is really a standard item, but this is the first coloring we have released this year. This season, we have selected bright colors that are not autumn/winter-like, as there were silver and dark red items in the 90's vintage collection. I thought it would be a good idea to follow the trend of those days.

. The first shop is "RECORD STATION," which offers a wide selection of used vinyl records.

Tanaka:Mr. Yoshikawa, you are a music lover, aren't you? . I recently bought a turntable, but I don't have any records yet. . so I thought I would ask Mr. Yoshikawa to choose one for me.

Yoshikawa:I love it , but it is suddenly very hard (laughs). What kind of music do you usually listen to?

Tanaka:I listen to quite a variety of music. What I want today is energizing music, the kind I like to listen to on Tuesday mornings!

Yoshikawa:Tuesday?

Tanaka:Yes, yes! Not Monday, but Tuesday (laughs). On Monday, you start work in the mode of giving up. The problem is Tuesday. When you are thinking that the week is still long, you want music that will lift your spirits.

Yoshikawa:Do you have a preference for rock, or four-piece music, or something in that area?

Tanaka:I'll leave that part up to you (laughs). I like rock music, dance music, J-pop, and songs. I heard Mayumi Gowa's "Koibito Yo" on vinyl, and it sounded great. That's when I bought a turntable.

Yoshikawa:I'm very reluctant. I need a half hour to think about it (laughs).

. You start by looking for techno and house music on the shelves.

Yoshikawa:. I thought I'd start out by digging into the music I like. How about this one?

Yoshikawa:It was released in 1999, and it's called one of the best albums of Detroit techno. It starts with a lyrical intro, gradually builds up, and when you realize it, it's like you're getting excited.

Tanaka:Wow! I'd like to listen to it a bit.

Let's have a listen!

Tanaka:I don't know , that's exciting.

What do you think?

Tanaka:(Listening to the record) Ah, I see! So this is how it feels! It has a Tuesday morning feel to it, like it's slowly rising. It would be even better if there were vocals on this.

Yoshikawa:I see. I guess I'd prefer not techno or house then.

Tanaka:Yes, maybe we should be a little closer to home .

Yoshikawa:. Then I'll change my route and look at the J-Pop shelves.

Tanaka:Oh, that's nice!

Yoshikawa:Do you like Yumi or something?

Tanaka:I love it!

Yoshikawa:How about this one? How about this one? I like it because it has a mellow feel to it. It may not turn you on, but....

Tanaka:That's nice! I was actually checking out the shelves here a while ago. And it's an album, so there are a lot of songs on it .

Yoshikawa:The first song is "Hikikikumo", so you can sit back and relax with a cup of coffee, but the third song, "Koi no Super Parashooter", is an up-tempo song, so that's where you turn it on (laughs).

Tanaka:Looks good! I will adopt that plan!

Yoshikawa:I'm glad you liked it (laughs).

Is this the first time for you to choose a record for someone?

Yoshikawa:. it's my first time. . but I gradually became more and more focused when I was choosing.

Tanaka:I stopped talking and quietly searched for them (laughs).

Yoshikawa:For the first record, I simply recommended what I liked, and for the second one, you said at the beginning that you also liked song-like songs, so that gave me an idea. . Actually, when I was a student, I used to shoot skate videos with my friends and we used "Hikikumo" as a track. So it is a song that holds a lot of memories for me.

Tanaka:Oh, wow, that's not true! I'm glad to hear those stories too. I was also looking at the record when I walked into the store, thinking I wanted it personally, so maybe our telepathy got through (laughs).
