- Today I took this photo at a scrap yard. Various things are dismantled here, but it is also the starting point where new things are created. What does scrap and build mean to you, Sennosuke?
I believe that the classic Kabuki play is a scrap-and-build process. So-called "Shori-ba-ri" may be similar to this. Sometimes I remove words from a script because they are difficult to understand, while other times I emphasize lines that are in tune with the current era. . Even if it is a classic performance, there are times when it is not possible because it is not in keeping with the times. However, I believe that times change just like fashion trends. Even if it is destroyed now, it will be reevaluated someday, and a new one will be created, and I believe that it will continue to evolve.
- As traditional arts get older, the expressions become more sophisticated .
Hmmm, what's going on (laughs)? I don't know. That is why I enjoy doing my best in the present moment, because I am sure that there is a certain atmosphere that only I can create today that will not be present 50 years from now. I am always thinking about how to express myself in a way that will resonate with anyone, whether in the present or in the future.

- This year marks the 20th anniversary of your artistic career. Looking back, how do you feel?
It all happened so fast. Kabuki is special and I am allowed to make my debut at that age, but 20 years is a so-so artistic career. But as a Kabuki performer, I was still a newcomer. Looking back, I think everything has led me to where I am today. There have been difficult times, but I am thrilled when I recall the sights and sensations I saw when I first stood on stage, and I don't want to forget that. The atmosphere, the tension, and the elation of being seen by others are etched in my body and have become my engine.
- I think many readers have an impression that Kabuki is a very difficult thing to get into. How should we enjoy it?
. You don't have to be particularly prepared. I want people to come and see kabuki just as they would go to a museum or a movie theater. You can't understand that until you see and experience it, so I'd like you to come and see it at the theater first. . Anyway, I hope you will watch it as you like. You can focus on the actors or enjoy the story. Even in the same play, different actors express themselves differently, and even the same actors change their expressions as they get older. . If the story is difficult, it is easier to understand if you watch it while listening to the commentary with an earphone guide.
- Do you think Kabuki is an art or entertainment?
Personally, I think it has both aspects. There are historical performances, and there are also modern super kabuki plays with themes such as "Final Fantasy" and "One Piece" that are easy to touch on. But I dare say that you should see the classic performances. They are the base of Kabuki, and they contain everything.
