Naoki Matayoshi dreamed of wearing pajamas to sleep with dragons.

Naoki Matayoshi is a multi-talented comedian and writer, and is also known as one of the most stylish comedians in Japan. Matayoshi has launched his own brand, "Suiryusha," and is releasing pajamas that reflect on his birthplace, Neyagawa. His life and fashion history up to now are connected like a single river. Along with his commitment to fashion, his love for his hometown also flowed without stagnation.

Pajamas in which dragons protect a good night's sleep.

The sense of coloring that has been cultivated through the experience of working with soccer magazines is demonstrated without regret in these pajamas. Under the brand name "Tsurusha," only one set of pajamas was produced. The production of these pajamas is deeply related to Matayoshi's hometown, Neyagawa City, Osaka.

. It was not so much that I wanted to create a brand, but rather that I wanted to create pajamas. I like to research the origins of place names, and when I looked up the origin of "Neyagawa," the name of my hometown, I found that there are many theories, but the name "Neyagawa" comes from the house where the great people of the past stayed when they traveled between Kyoto and Osaka, so it was called "Neyagawa . . Another is "Neyagawa" because it is a river that flows there. Another theory is that people who hunted in the Ikoma area used to sleep there. I think it is very interesting that the origin of the place name, which has been handed down from the past, is linked to the way the town is used today. When I began to realize that I was born and raised in a place and a town where people sleep, I suddenly started thinking about making pajamas. The concept of "pajamas that you can wear to bed or go out in" was born 7 or 8 years ago. At first, I started secretly trying out various pajamas without consulting anyone, and it was a year ago that I mentioned it in public. . That's when this project really started to take off.
The name "Suiryusha" also comes from the Neyagawa River, and I have a strong emotional attachment to it, as I used to run along the Neyagawa River when I was a student. I have those memories, and the image of flowing water somehow made me think that I would be able to get a good night's sleep, which is how I came up with the brand name "Mizuryusha.

Seven or eight years have passed since the conception. The pajamas were completed by piecing together the countless nights I have slept in them and the vast number of old clothes I have worn over the years like pieces of a puzzle. The pajamas are the culmination of Matayoshi's personality.

I had a stock of pajamas that I had worn in the past and other clothes that had become sleepwear because they were so comfortable, so I gave them a detailed image, and they took shape. I told them how I wanted the pants to have pockets and hems, and how I wanted the tops to be loose-fitting so that I could wear them without stress, and they made prototypes for me, which I further modified. I had the image that the top and pants were made separately, so I was worried that they would look uncomfortable when worn as a set-up, but thanks to your fine-tuning, the fit when worn as a set was better than I had imagined. The embroidery was so detailed and the color scheme was so beautifully reproduced that I thought it was a good job.

This piece of clothing, which seems to be a combination of the best of the pajamas he has used and loved, has Mr. Matayoshi's thoughts running through each part and detail. The fabric used is Moleskin Bio, woven with viscose rayon. Even though it is called "Moleskin Bio," it does not have the stiffness of French work, but is supple to the touch and looks quite comfortable to wear.

I had samples made from three different fabrics that I had narrowed down from the many different types of pajamas I had worn in the past, and I chose the ones that I felt comfortable in. I tried them on at home and decided on the one I thought was the most comfortable. I heard that this fabric will change over time, so I am looking forward to that as well. The buttons are wood buttons like those used on Hawaiian shirts. White buttons would have stood out when matched with the color of the fabric, so I chose these buttons.

An original dragon embroidery sits on the left breast. He often wears embroidered clothes, such as "doublet" and a scajan, so he is very particular about his embroidery.

I have always liked embroidered clothes, but when I was in elementary and junior high school, they were too expensive and out of my reach. Now that I am an adult, I can afford to buy embroidered clothes, but embroidered clothes are still very special to me. I wanted to embroider an ukiyoe-like dragon on this one, so I ordered it in great detail. I wanted it to face to the right and swirl a little, and since it is a dragon for sleeping, I wanted its mouth to be closed. The color was blue to give it a watery look. Dragons are also called "water gods" and are revered, so I also included a prayer for a good night's sleep, hoping that the dragon would protect me. It just so happens that this year is the year of the dragon, and I thought that would be a good omen.
