Miyuki Aihara chooses a gift for someone special at D'Orsay.
Life with D'ORSAY

Miyuki Aihara chooses a gift for someone special at D'Orsay.

As the air becomes translucent and cooler in the coming season, fragrances seem to stand out for some reason. Perfumes by the French-born D'ORSAY are characterized by a soft fragrance that defies the stereotyped notion of perfumes. The playfulness of the French style, with all the models represented by the initials of a certain person and a poetic caption, is sure to spice up your gift-giving. For the holiday season, we asked model Miyuki Arihara, a regular DORSÉ user, to choose a DORSÉ perfume for her loved one, while sharing her thoughts on gifts and fragrances.

The gift is based on consideration for the recipient and a hint of conversation.

I think that many people find it difficult to choose a gift. Do you like to choose gifts?

Zaihara: I have always liked to give gifts to people. So I think I am a person who is used to giving gifts.

Is it the origin or the reason why you did it?

Zaihara: I grew up in a family where giving year-end and mid-year gifts was the norm, so it became a habit for me to send something to those who have helped me since I was in college. My mother likes shopping and making people happy, and she always brings a gift when she goes to see people. So it's like a genetic trait (laughs).

What do you keep in mind when giving gifts?

Zaihara: I am conscious of giving gifts that will disappear after eating, drinking, or using, what we call "vanishing items. For example, food, candles, and perfume are examples. As a giver, I feel that a vase, for example, would be nice to receive, but if it stays in the house forever, it might be a little heavy in terms of a gift. Also, I try to choose something that perfectly fits the situation of the recipient at that time.

Do you do research to find out what they are up to?

Zaihara: Rather than researching anew, I try to remember what the person said he or she wanted in a previous conversation.

I thought you said you wouldn't do anything so wild as to ask him directly.

Zaihara: I think that if you tell them in advance, they will expect a gift, and I think that unexpected gifts are the best, so I give them something out of the blue that I know they will absolutely love.

For an anniversary of some kind?

Zaihara: Of course, there are anniversaries such as birthdays, but I also often give gifts as daily appreciation. There are many people around me who are older than I am, and thankfully I have many opportunities to treat them to dinner. I try to give them a small gift the next time I see them as a token of my appreciation.

What are some of the most memorable gifts you have received?

Zaihara: There are many things, but recently I was given a beautiful and lovely cookie that I would not have eaten unless I took the time to eat it. It was a time when I was busy and didn't have much time, so I felt like I was given the gift of time to eat the cookies slowly. That time helped me to relax. I think it is a very meaningful gift to give someone something that will not disappear unless they take time when they are busy. For example, the next time we meet, I hope that by giving them a cup of tea, which I also take the time to brew, they will be able to relax.

Conversely, are there any gifts that you have given that you are particularly attached to?

Zaihara: Well...I once had a pair of sneakers pulled from my inventory that had already sold out. If I feel like I want to give this one away in my mind, I can't help but feel bad if it's not it (laughs). The sneakers are from a relatively independent brand. I made an appointment to visit the store and told them that I really wanted these sneakers. I made an appointment and went to the store, and told them that I really wanted this item. It was a matter of persistence, wasn't it?
