ARC'TERYX SHINJUKU

The more you know about Arc'teryx, the more you like it.

From full-fledged outdoor use to street use. ARC'TERYX" continues to attract many people with its sophisticated design and functionality designed for use in the field. Born in Vancouver, Canada, the brand has gained worldwide support in recent years. Through an interview with Ken Takagi, who is in charge of the brand in Japan, we will reveal the brand's present and future image, as well as the full picture of the new flagship store in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

In recent years, the company has also focused on footwear.

- In the past, Arc'teryx had a strong image of shell jackets and backpacks, but in recent years, the company seems to be focusing on footwear as well.

Takagi:You are right. Arc'teryx started its footwear division in 2015. At the time, design and development was based in Europe, and the distance from its home country of Canada was an issue. In 2021, the company moved to Portland, U.S., and established a design center specializing in footwear. The footwear developed there has been released this season.

- You yourself are wearing "Arc'teryx" footwear today, aren't you?

Takagi: This is a pair of approach shoes for climbing called "Crags". They are slip-on type shoes that can be worn with the heel crushed. In the climbing scene, continuous movement is required, such as changing into and out of climbing shoes, so it makes sense to be able to crush the heel and put them on and take them off smoothly. In addition to the squashed heel, the shoes can be attached to a backpack with a carabiner loop for easy portability. The Vibram outsole is non-slip and comfortable, making them suitable for city wear.

- This May, Arc'teryx established a new development base, the Tokyo Creation Center, in Daikanyama, Tokyo. Have you already seen any concrete results from this?

Takagi:Specifically, we are just getting started. It's only been six months. Arcteryx is a brand that takes a lot of time for manufacturing. I think it will be around 2026 before the Tokyo Creation Center's efforts are reflected in our products.
