Do you like places with nature such as the one we shot today?
I like it rather well. Coming here between shoots like today is a nice change of pace. （I often shoot outside, but even in the same cold weather, I felt comfortable today.
What kind of place are you originally from?
Since we were in Hyogo Prefecture, we had both the ocean and mountains, but our surroundings were mountains and rice paddies. I played outside all the time until dark with neighborhood friends, including on the road in front of our house.
What made you decide to become an actor from such a place?
It all started when I moved to a new school at the end of my fourth year of elementary school. I really didn't like the place I moved to. It was the same from the moment I arrived there, and my personality became more and more twisted from there, as I could tell (laughs). (laughs) I had friends to a certain extent, but I began to think it was boring. Then I saw a movie on BS TV, and I thought it was interesting that so many things were possible in this place. I guess I was too bored in my daily life, so I longed for that kind of thing. Later, when I started working right after graduating from junior high school, I started going to the movie theater.
It is unusual for you to work right after graduating from junior high school, isn't it? Did you feel anxious about it?
I have an older brother, but I had seen him working right after graduating from junior high school, so I thought I could live a normal life, and I didn't like the town I lived in anyway, so I wanted to get out as soon as possible (laughs). (laughs) I wanted to save up money and get out of here right away, that was my sole intention. I decided when I was in the sixth grade or so that I would save money and leave town after graduating from junior high school. That's how much I hated it.
I've been told not to say too much about the town because it would be disrespectful to the people who live there, but I just can't help it.... I don't know why. It's not because of what happened. It was just that the town had a kind of gloomy atmosphere, and I was so depressed that I wondered why my father and mother had moved to such a place .......
(laughs). Are there places you have lived in since then that you have disliked that much?
There are. There are some places I just don't like. I feel like it's a city that has nothing to do with me. I really think that being in a place that you like is really important. You come back to that place, and from there you say, "I'm off! I thought that I absolutely have to live in a place that I like.
There is a saying, "If you live there, it's your home," but it wasn't true.
I think that word is about the inside of the house. Because even though I didn't like the town, I loved the inside of the house. I loved the inside of the house, but I couldn't tolerate that town where I stepped out.
(laughs). What is the moment in your daily life when you feel most excited?
I like to take a bath at home.
You have been a member of the theater company Tokyo Kandaike for a long time, including the period when you were a trainee.
There are many things I have learned as an actor, but I still think it is to be patient. Patience...... is what it's all about in the end.
What do you mean by patience?
You are taught how to read a script and how to be physically active, and to a certain extent you learn these things on your own, but I think the most important thing is patience. As with any job, even if you have something you want to say, you have to swallow it. It is a job that we all do together. After you have been doing it for a long time, you may want to say something like, "You should have done it this way," but you leave that to the professionals and say, "I don't have to say anything. Because we are in the water business, some of the work is interesting and some of it is not. But I have to keep doing it. I think they are all a form of perseverance.
I think that being an actor is much more difficult than one might imagine.
Acting is almost always physical labor. Really physical work.
Still, are there moments when you find it interesting?
Yes, I guess the fact that I continue to work so hard must mean that I'm hooked. It's hard work, but when I go to bed at night, I think, "Oh, I should have done that part this way," and it bothers me. That's how attached I am to it. But I don't want to say that I do this work because I enjoy it and like it. After all, there are tough times, or rather, most of the time it is tough.

Is there ever a time when it pays off?
It is really, really slight.
(laughs). You once said that being an actor is a job that doesn't start until you are called.
That is to do my current job properly. I think the current work is also an audition. People who see the work will want to call that person again, and it will lead to the next one. After all, it is a connection.
