The misconception is that "Gore-Tex = don't wash".
- I believe that daily care is the key to making your favorite GORE-TEX® sneakers last as long as possible. Mr. Hirai, could you tell us how to properly care for our GORE-TEX® sneakers?
Hirai: The basic care procedure can be considered the same as for ordinary sneakers. The important part of daily care is to remove dirt frequently. And occasionally wash them with a detergent appropriate for the shoes, such as for sneakers. It is also important to remove foreign objects such as pebbles that may damage the Gore-Tex® fabric inside, and to avoid using a hard brush when washing.
Yoppi: To prolong the life of your favorite sneakers, it is important to take care of them on an ongoing basis. That is true not only for Gore-Tex, but for sneakers in general.
Hirai: Exactly. Let me show you a specific example of the importance of care.
Hirai: We sprayed water on Nike's "Air Max SNDR GORE-TEX" Gore-Tex sneakers. The one on the left has been properly cared for. You can see that the upper surface is repelling water.
seidai: Yes. You can see water droplets.
Hirai: On the right, it has been left for a while with dirt on it. Water has seeped into the upper. The Gore-Tex® fabric protects it, so water cannot get inside, but the upper absorbs water and becomes heavy, and it also doesn't look good. If this condition continues, the upper material may absorb water and wet your feet.
seidai: It's true. It's totally different.
Hirai: GORE-TEX® sneakers are made of carefully selected materials that do not absorb water easily, so they are water-repellent when new. As the uppers become dirty and worn with wear, the water repellency decreases, so we recommend regular washing to clean the uppers and the use of a water repellent spray.
Yoppi: Sneakers and apparel alike, "Gore-Tex products aren't supposed to be washed, right?" But that's not true.
Hirai: We often hear that, but it is a misunderstanding. Rather, it's the opposite: the more you wash it, the longer it will last. GORE-TEX® products are durable and designed to last. I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that we are promoting PFAS-free initiatives and other environmentally friendly manufacturing practices.
seidai: I see. I learned a lot today that I didn't know.
Yoppi: After listening to Mr. Hirai's talk today, I also realized that I need to convey the appeal of Gore-Tex sneakers to customers more! I am very happy to hear your words.
