It doesn't look like it's dressed up, but it is. (Ayumi Nakajima)

I heard that the designer Margaret Howell herself draws inspiration from what she sees in her daily life. In a similar vein, I saw in another interview that Mr. Iga likes to observe people on trains.
Nakajima: I also wanted to ask Mr. Iga about it. When I saw a movie styled by Mr. Iga, I thought that he really looks at people, young and old, male and female.
Iga: Human observation is the best, isn't it? After all, the answers are already out there. Some office workers are neatly dressed in suits, while others have wrinkles on their backs that say, "I can't get enough of this. In order to express the reality of everyday life, our job is to rearrange the clothes that are available in the world and make them look natural. So, what we do is like DJing. Whether the clothes are very old or very new, as long as the pitch is right and the fader is set properly, we can make them all work together. I want the audience to think, "This is my story," because they are part of the current era. Of course, that depends on the nature of the work. No one would think, "This is my story," after watching "The Groundhog" (laughs).
Nakajima: Iga's styling, which is based on such reality, is exquisitely different from that of a stylist in the fashion field or a costume designer who is working on a film. It's realistic, but it's also very well executed. I always find that interesting.
Iga: Thank you very much. Let's do it together sometime. We should use this shoot as a warm-up (laughs).

Nakajima-san and Fukuchi-san, in your daily lives, is there anything that you keep in mind as actors?
Nakajima: I believe that daily life is very important for expression because what I feel in my daily life is directly reflected in my works. I try to write down how I feel and how I respond to my feelings on a daily basis. Sometimes I unconsciously observe people. If something impresses me, it can be reflected in my performance later on.
Iga: I have a lot of very small drawers.
Nakajima: I think it is a good thing. As is the case with movies, we sometimes watch other people's plays and unconsciously imitate them in some way.
Fukuchi: There is a story that this current daily exchange reminded me of. Once, when I was riding my bicycle in a place far from where I live, I ran out of air in my tire and had to borrow an air pump from a bicycle shop in town. I parked my bike in front of the store and went to inflate it, but the owner came out with great force and said, "Give me a break in front of a new car! At that moment, I realized that I was in front of a brand-new bicycle that had been arranged very neatly. The owner's words sounded like he was talking about sports cars.
Iga: That phrase is hard to hear, isn't it (laughs).
Fukuchi: I was secretly happy because I thought it was a word you don't come across very often (laughs). It was a great time for me to meet a craftsman in a town I have no connection to, and to be able to imagine from his words his commitment as a craftsman and the scenes of his daily life.

This time, I think we were able to take advantage of the "reality" of Margaret Howell's clothes in the photo shoot. Let's close with Ms. Iga talking about the appeal of "Margaret Howell".
Iga: Margaret Howell's clothes have the feeling of vintage clothing from the start, but the way they are expressed is very elegant. That's why even new clothes feel comfortable as soon as you put your sleeves on them, and they are easy to style. Also, the timelessness of the clothes is appealing because it does not look out of place when combined with other things, such as the denim and snow shoes I brought with me today.
Nakajima: Oh, can I start with you? There is something I wanted to say when I mentioned earlier that I like vintage clothes. I used to wear secondhand clothes because I was embarrassed of myself for wearing brand-name clothes, partly because I didn't have much money. I used to wear secondhand clothes because I was ashamed of myself for wearing brand-name clothes. I don't think so much about it now, but I used to be more self-conscious.
Iga: Yoshio Hayakawa-ism.
Nakajima: Yes. At the root of my thinking is, "How uncool it is to be cool. However, Margaret Howell's clothes are stylish without looking like they are dressed up in a good way. I think that balance is very good.
