Japan, a powerhouse of animation, has produced works across a wide range of genres. Among them, cyberpunk science fiction has gained particular popularity in recent years. A major exhibition featuring *Ghost in the Shell*, a landmark work in the genre, is currently being held at Toranomon Hills.
This exhibition covers everything from Masamune Shirow’s 1989 original work to the entire anime series. It offers a comprehensive overview of the 30-year history of the Ghost in the Shell series.
In addition to works directed by legendary directors such as Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama, Kazuya Kise, and Nobuyuki Aramaki, the exhibition will also feature works related to the new anime series scheduled to air in 2026, produced by Science SARU. This is a rare opportunity to view these works while comparing their unique themes and worlds.
As you pass through the entrance, the first thing you see is “NODE” (a node of thought), which connects to the Ghost in the Shell information network. A vast immersive space unfolds before you, evoking the “cyberspace” depicted in the series.
In the next zone, “PATH A (The Main Route Through Which Information and Consciousness Flow),” video interviews with past directors are screened. Each director offers their perspective on the concepts of “Ghost” and “Shell,” as well as on the question of what *Ghost in the Shell* truly was.
In the vast space of approximately 1,000 square meters beyond that, over 1,600 production materials are gathered in one place. Visitors can explore a vast collection of materials that bring the works to life, including anime concept art, original drawings, background art, and animation cels.
On display in the center is a new sculpture by contemporary artist Motoki Sorayama, titled *SexyRobot_The Ghost in the Shell type 1*, modeled after the protagonist Motoko Kusanagi. In fact, it is said that Motoki Sorayama and Masamune Shirow, the manga artist who created the original work, were close enough friends to have exchanged letters back and forth in the past.
In addition, over 150 types of official merchandise exclusive to this exhibition will be available for purchase at the venue. The lineup includes a wide variety of items, ranging from apparel such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and caps to charms, posters, and stickers.
