Sculptor Takao Obata, who has transformed the physical sensibilities and dynamic movements honed as a breakdancer into sculptural expression, has collaborated with Japan-based high-end jewelry brand CORE JEWELS to release a collection of sculptural pieces.
“Billed as ”wearable sculpture,” this piece is a necklace version scaled down to approximately 1/20th the size of Mr. Obata’s wood sculpture “B-BOY Down jacket NANAME 2016,” which stands over 190 cm tall and is crafted from camphor wood.
In stark contrast to decaying wood, this piece—crafted from gold and diamonds—is a special collaborative work created by *Core Jewels*, which has helped Mr. Obata expand the boundaries of his sculptural expression.

This work embodies the two contrasting states of sculpture: "motion" when suspended and "stillness" when placed on a surface.
Produced in a limited edition of just two pieces, this piece illustrates how a single sculpture can exist in two distinct forms. The body and chain are crafted from 10K white gold. The brilliance of the more than 2,300 diamonds adorning the surface creates a gradient effect along the piece’s contours.
The following is a statement from Mr. Obata regarding the production of this work.
This piece is not merely jewelry; it is a "sculpture to wear."
Although it can be worn around the body using a chain, its essence lies solely in the sculpture itself.
The body is not a canvas for decoration, but a medium for conveying sculpture.
By transforming sculptures—which are typically large, heavy, and space-consuming—into a size that can be carried alongside the body, they become free entities, somewhat liberated from the pull of gravity.
Though small, the sculpture, crafted from 10-karat gold and diamonds, feels substantial in the hand.
Diamonds contain light and incorporate space within their form.
As countless diamonds catch the light, shapes and spaces blend into gradients, and their boundaries dissolve until they are no longer visible.
Not only are we freed from gravity, but light also blurs the boundaries between form and space.
Added to that is the "timelessness" inherent in materials like metal and stone.
This sculpture works just as well as a display piece as it does when worn.
If anything, I have always been committed to creating sculptures simply by letting them rest under the force of gravity.
When the chain is removed and the piece is placed in open space, it becomes a small, powerful sculpture of a human figure.
The "dynamic" state associated with the body and the "static" state situated in space.
By presenting these two approaches, the true meaning of "wearable sculpture" becomes clear.
Limited to two copies.
A sculpture to carry, a form to wear.
Sculptures to carry with you, forms to wear
These two limited-edition “wearable sculptures” will go on display at the "GR8" store starting at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1, and will be available for order both in-store and online.
“A conceptual sculpture that navigates the various contrasts between ”motion“ and ”stillness," differences in materials and scale from the original work, and the interplay between physical presence and visual perception. We invite you to come see it for yourself.
