The publishing industry as a whole has long been said to be in a slump or recession, but at zine and art book events in particular, one senses a level of enthusiasm that bounces back against the headwinds. Especially at the 10th "ZINE" and "ART BOOK" event, which will be held this year, we can feel a lot of enthusiasm.tokyo art book fair." is a popular event that is also a passionate event in terms of its size and the crowds it attracts.
The "TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR" started in 2009 as Japan's first book fair specializing in art. This year, the fair will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, which just reopened this spring.
At the venue, about 300 exhibitors, including Japanese and international publishers, galleries, and artists who produce creative art books and zines, will come together to showcase their publications.
One of the main features is "Guest Country," a project launched in 2015 that focuses on one country or region and introduces its publishing culture. This year's featured country is the United States, a leader in the world's independent publishing culture. The rich and diverse American publishing culture, with its art publishers, bookstores, and numerous artists experimenting with the use of printed matter, is presented in two exhibitions, "Radical Pages: A Selection of American Zines" and "Exhibition: 10 Years of The Thing The two exhibits and talks will explore the rich diversity of the American publishing culture.
In addition, there will be special programs such as the "Japanese Artists' Books: Then and Now" exhibition, which introduces artists' books by Japanese artists along with the voices of their creators, and an exhibition that looks back on 100 years of the Shiseido Gallery's activities through the catalogs it has published to date. Special programs such as the "Japanese Artists' Books: Then and Now" exhibition will be held, as well as talk shows with invited guests and book signings by the artists.
You can immerse yourself in book culture through encounters with unique books that are rarely found in general bookstores, direct communication with the creators, and a variety of programs that unravel the appeal of art books and zines from various perspectives.
