Whereas previously it was necessary to cover the air unit with a layer of rubber to protect it and make it more durable, the new innovation integrates the air and its outer layer as a Vapormax Air unit, allowing it to stand alone as an outsole.
While the previous version required non-flexible sections to maintain structure, the new unit is able to maintain a flexible shape, which significantly changes the shape and allows more air to be placed directly under the foot. The combination of these technologies eliminates the need for a traditional foam midsole.
By reducing the weight and volume of the foam, the new midsole is more flexible and resilient without compromising its structure, while also being lighter and more compact. In addition, the upper is positioned directly over the air unit for a softer, pillow-like feel and better resilience. The Nike Air Vapormax combines the Air unit with a Nike Flyknit upper to provide precise support where it is needed and further reduce the shoe's weight.
