Stylist Masaaki Ida proposes "MHL. clothes that elevate the everyday" vol.4

MHL., which produces sophisticated and timeless collections based on the essence of military and work, was launched in 2003 as the casual line of MARGARET HOWELL. In order to propose outfits that take contemporary daily life up a notch, we have invited stylist Masaaki Ida to introduce daily, iconic styles mixed with recommended key items and Ida's personal outfits. In the fourth and final installment, we propose a playful winter style, focusing mainly on clothes with rich textures and different expressions!

〈MHL.Chunky cotton knit ¥36,300(MHL.)

Inspired by vintage knit jumpers, this wide striped knit has a crafted look. The nuanced colors and carefully knitted construction give it a hand-knit look and feel. The knitting yarn is a light, bulky cotton with a gap in the center of the yarn. Each piece is knit slowly, creating a gentle expression of warmth. The characteristic square neckline, which makes the most of the raglan sleeve design, gives the garment a cozy look when worn with a crew-neck or turtleneck T-shirt! Ida expresses her styling image based on such high-quality designs and expressions.

"This chic color and fabric alone make for a sophisticated outfit, so I was conscious of creating a simple, modern look. I took advantage of the square neckline to show a bit of skin on the shoulders for a bit of sex appeal, while adding a bi-colored scarf to balance the fashionable look so that it doesn't become too rough. Overall, I kept the color scheme mature by limiting the number of colors, while adding a hint of sophistication with the sneakers.

Inspired by the English fisherman's jacket, the coat features iconic details such as an A-line swing silhouette, wide stand collar, and large patch pockets. The longer length and padded inserts create a fresh voluminous silhouette that fits today's mood!　The warp is made of cotton and the weft is made of nylon, weaving the fabric densely together to create a unique bounciness and dry touch. With an eye on "the realism you see on the street," Mr. Ida proposes a combination with vintage clothing!

It has a simple face, but the three-dimensional stand collar, pockets, and volume of the padding give it a sense of presence as outerwear. I decided to coordinate it with keywords that express lightness, such as "casual," "active," and "relaxed. I matched vintage college sweatshirts, corduroy pants, and baseball caps, and used brighter colors to create a sense of liveliness. I think I have created a style that is the most distinctive in this Series.

This short coat is based on the "Fair Know Jacket," a military jacket of the British Army in the 1950s, and is full of unique details such as large hip pockets, wide placket, rounded collar, and buttons on the front. The length is shortened to make the box silhouette shorter. The boxy silhouette with shortened length adds a light and elegant impression with a design that looks great with layered clothing. The low-tech, carefully woven heavy melton has a thick yet soft texture that gives you a sense of exuberance every time you wear it. The deep navy color that gives a mature and modern look to your style just by wearing it is also attractive. How does one incorporate what Mr. Ida calls "the perfect coat" into everyday wear?

The navy color, the soft heavy melton, and the charming design are perfect. I took the liberty of thinking it was a complete coat that didn't need any additions or subtractions, and I didn't want to do anything unnecessary. To add depth through the texture of the material, I layered a white inner knit with a mock neck and khaki inner down to create a clean, urban look. I sought a modern look with a balance of formal and informal. The theme of this Series was to think freely about "how to wear it or how to break it down" when creating an outfit for every day. Now is the time when you can say "what you like = cool," and I want more people to enjoy fashion freely.
