Photography, so called because it means "a true picture" in Chinese, has not only a realistic quality that preserves the truth, but now also has a role as a tool for personal expression. However, photography is now not only a realistic means of preserving the truth, but it also serves as a tool for personal expression.
HOUYHNHNM's has also been working with photographer YUKI TAKENOUCHI, who was inspired by his encounter with people living in a place far removed from his own life and customs, and the culture shock of their worldview, and began attempting to expand his usual perspective in his work.
The resulting work is titled "Warp and Woof," meaning "warp and woof" or "the foundation (element) of things," and will be exhibited at the PGI gallery in Higashi Azabu, Tokyo.
Until now, he has presented motifs of living creatures, man-made objects, and nature as a single work of art, but this time, he challenged himself to develop his work horizontally. By doing so, he expresses "a broadening of viewpoints, events in the vicinity that may have been overlooked, and the flow of time.
At first glance, it appears to be a landscape that stretches across the ground, but it is yet another world that is a combination of several scenes. The following is a statement from Mr. Takenouchi.
When I visited a hippie settlement for a photo shoot, I was shocked by the culture shock of a world so different from the customs, behavior, and way of life in the place where I live.
When I was stunned in the mountains late at night, the editor who was with me said to me, "Don't you feel as if the map of your own mind has expanded when you learn about the world "on the other side," a world far removed from your usual self? I suddenly felt as if my vision had become clearer.
. Then, in an effort to focus not only on the scenery around me, to which I always turn, but also on the larger world that makes up that scenery, I tried shooting landscapes with my usual telephoto lens.
I composed my own mental map by arranging different landscapes seen from the same place, landscapes that are in different places but similar to each other.
About 24 archival pigment prints will be exhibited at the venue, as well as his first video work and music by Fumitake Tamura that evokes a sense of coincidence. This music will be available at the venue as a cassette tape, and a second edition of his previous work, "Distance and Depth," which has sold out, will also be available; a collection of this work will appear in mid-October, so please look in at the right time.
