OTONA TRUCK, S.T,N.E. About furniture created by an overwhelming inclination toward comfort.

TRUCK FURNITURE is an Osaka furniture maker with no wholesaler, yet it continues to produce products that are admired by many people. Norihiko Kise, the creator of TRUCK FURNITURE, launched his solo label, S.T.N.E., at the end of last year. What's more, he has taken a big step in the direction of simplicity. What is behind this change? We were able to ask him a lot of questions about his furniture and himself.

Can I be comfortable with myself?

When I talk to you, I feel that you are not confined to your own world at all. Are there more and more things you like?

Kise: If you ask me if I like more things, I may not have that many things. I decide instantly whether I like something or not, and I am confident that I can create a worldview by collecting items that interest me, even if they are 100s of dollars. For example, when I was passing by a small store in Los Angeles and picked up a few things I liked and held them on the counter, the staff said to me, "This is really nice," to which I replied, "No, no, it's what you guys sell!

You are a great connoisseur.

Kise: Once, when I was in the hospital for a week for back surgery, I brought in a dimmer lamp to adjust the room to my comfort. I also covered a toilet paper bar to soften the fluorescent light in the hand-washing area, which I could not change, and played music. Word got around about this room, and even the head nurse came to see it (laughs). That's how you create a comfortable place for yourself with what you have.

Do you feel the same way in your store in Osaka?

Kise: I want to do it right because I feel responsible for the customers coming in, but more than that, I'm just doing what feels good to me. That's all there is to it. It's all about me. First of all, I want to make myself feel good.

I can tell that Kise-san's sensitivity and commitment to comfort is outstanding.

Kise: But that doesn't mean that if I keep saying things like this, I'll become a noisy person (laughs). (Laughs.) That's not what I meant. As another episode, a friend of mine organizes vintage motocross races. The day before the race, everyone had to tune up their bikes, but I'm not much of a fanatic, so instead I painted the red gas cans I brought brown, wrapped tissue boxes in my favorite color of cloth tape, and did other tuning up in my own way. All those kinds of unrelated things. It was also about whether it made me feel good or not.

I understand that haruka nakamura produced the music for . You also talk about music and movies in your writings. Do you feel that these works are part of your furniture-making process?

Kise: I watch movies simply because I like them, but I am also busy when I watch them. Most of the movies are in English, but I like to listen to people telling each other silly jokes even in tense and dangerous situations. But I don't speak the language well enough to understand everything, so I have to compare Japanese subtitles with English, and of course there are so many things to watch: cars, furniture, clothes, buildings, and so on.

That must be tiring (laughs).

Kise: In terms of painting, I like an American painter named Andrew Wyeth. I had never heard of the artist at the time, but I saw an article about him in a newspaper and became interested, so I immediately went to an exhibition in Nagoya. I saw an article about him in the newspaper and was intrigued, so I immediately went to his exhibition in Nagoya. The sense of speed was really cool. As an aside, I have a touching story about a man who lived in the countryside for about 50 years and continued to paint landscapes in the same place. I asked him if his grandchildren were bored with him painting in the same place every day. He said, "What are you talking about, I want to paint from the moment I wake up in the morning. He said, "That's too cool, I admire that.
