The woman I met in Kamakura during hydrangea season had only just made up her mind to pursue photography the year before last. Seeing her talk so happily about her camera, I sensed both her star quality and her boundless potential.
MM6 Maison Margiela
MM6 Maison Margiela T-shirt
A moment in history.
When you think about it, the history of fashion is quite fascinating. For example, if you trace the origins of the T-shirt, you’ll find that it was originally underwear worn by the U.S. military. Its history is relatively short, dating back just over 100 years. As time went on, what was once underwear became something you could wear on its own, and the hem style—which had been tucked in as a remnant of its underwear origins—gradually shifted to being worn untucked. There was even a time when people used to tuck the hem into their belt buckles. Reading *The History of the T-Shirt in Japan* (2025, Chuo Koron Shinsha), which meticulously traces these changes, gave me a lot to think about. One recent trend is the popularity of logo T-shirts, but I’ve always found the idea of wearing one myself a bit embarrassing. But I realized I could actually pull off a *MM6 Maison Margiela* T-shirt—the one with the brand name written in a swirly, fluid script right down the center of the body. I also personally love the soft, drapey feel of the fabric. This summer, I’d love to pair it with chino shorts or cut-off jeans and just enjoy wearing it casually.

COMME des GARÇONS PARFUMS
Comme des Garçons Parfums Perfumes
That place.
Two years ago this June, I traveled to India for the first time. It was said to be the hottest time of the year, and I conducted interviews while exposed to the scorching sun day after day, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. From the dust-yellowed landscape to the underdeveloped social infrastructure, the caste system that still persists, and the warmth of the people I met— All of these things felt fresh to me, and it was a journey where I sensed a bottomless fascination and power unique to a developing nation. What brought those memories back to life was the perfume “TO VETIVER” by Comme des Garçons Parfum. Vetiver is a perennial plant native to India, and its earthy scent is said to be mentioned in Hindu scriptures. It’s fascinating how this fragrance, built around vetiver, blends seamlessly with the body and calms the mind. Personally, I also appreciate that it lacks the flashiness often found in fragrances—no sweetness or crispness. The fact that they packaged it in a vivid red is typical of Comme des Garçons. If I keep my thoughts on India, perhaps I’ll have another chance to visit.

To make this a great summer.
The rainy season is finally here, but am I the only one who doesn’t find it unpleasant? As usual, there’s plenty of cloud cover and rain, but since it’s not muggy, it’s actually quite comfortable. Plus, it feels like there are a lot of relatively cool days. The other day, I went to Yuigahama for a photo shoot, and the wind was so strong it was almost chilly. Seeing the beach huts under construction there made me realize that the hot season is just around the corner. I’m thinking of switching up my shampoo for the summer this year. After work, I go home and wash my hair in the bath first—washing away sweat and oil really helps me feel refreshed. That’s when I set my sights on the products from . Their key feature is the use of nano-diamonds. These are ultra-fine beauty ingredients born from cutting-edge technology, said to reach your hair, scalp, and skin while preserving moisture. Plus, they’re said to have relaxing effects and help reduce stress. The products that use nano-diamonds are the bottle-shaped shampoo and conditioner, and the tube-shaped hand cream. Another option is a silicone-free shampoo bar made with ingredients certified organic by New Zealand’s “BIO-GRO.” Apparently, you’re supposed to lather it up with a net or your hands before washing your hair. I’d like to use little things like this to lift my spirits and have a great summer.

Diary.
The other day, my mom told me, “I found your elementary school diary,” so even though I’d completely forgotten about it, I decided to take a look. The diary entries—which my teacher had practically forced me to write—were full of stuff I’d love to burn. Back then, I never would have dreamed that I, someone who wrote such rubbish and didn’t even go to college, would end up working in editing, however modestly, in the future.

Getting Ready for Summer: Part 1.
When you think of summer, you think of straw hats; when you think of straw hats, you think of summer. With that in mind, last summer I wore a bell hat from <Diaspora
Skateboze〉 bell hat made from natural raffia—a material crafted from processed palm leaves—about every other day. As the online store describes, “It features a unique flexibility that becomes more supple the more you wear it, allowing you to enjoy the aging process as the color changes over time.” True to that description, the more I wore it, the better it looked. I used to wipe it down lightly and hang it to dry in the shade after wearing it, so I was thinking I should have bought another one—and just then, an updated version was released in 2026. With the addition of a chin strap and a wooden adjuster, you can now hang it around your neck when you want to take it off briefly at places like izakayas, clubs, or the beach. This also significantly reduces the worry of losing it. It comes in sizes M and L, and since it’s made from natural materials, there are slight variations between individual pieces. This year, I plan to switch between last year’s model and the updated version, so I should be able to get through the summer in style.

Summer Preparations, Part 2.

Aesop Body Roll-On
Summer Preparations, Part 3.

Nomàt
Nomatt Skipper Shirt
Free-spirited.
The fabric is a ripstop blend of silk and cotton. While this material is known for its durability—often used in military and outdoor gear—the addition of silk gives it a surprisingly elegant and modern look. This skipper shirt was created by *Nomad*, a brand known for its genre-defying, free-spirited approach to design. Launched in 2020, the brand takes its name from “nomad,” and true to its roots, it operates freely—unbound by any specific constraints, following the wind and its own whims. While it goes without saying that it pairs perfectly with slacks, this is a piece you’ll want to wear with a laid-back style, like shorts and flip-flops.

KIJIMA TAKAYUKI
Takayuki Kijima's Cap
This is where your creativity is put to the test.
Should we call it a cap, or a scarf? A cap alone isn’t enough to block the strong summer sun, so you often end up wrapping a scarf over it, right?
This item combines both into one. It’s a cap with a brim attached to a large 66cm ×
112cm scarf, so you can wear it just like you would wrap a scarf around your head. That means you can style it however you like. You can pull it tight under your chin or tie it in the back—it’s an item that really puts your imagination to the test. By the way, it’s hand-washable, so you don’t have to worry even if you get drenched in sweat. It’s been a while since the so-called “headscarf” style gained popularity, but if you want to stand out from the crowd, isn’t this the one?

RIMLESS TOKYO
Rimless Tokyo Sunglasses
The joy of choosing.
I used to think rimless eyewear didn’t suit me, but I found a pair at Rimless Tokyo that fits me perfectly. One of the reasons I found it was the sheer variety of options. With 12 lens shapes, 22 lens colors, and 3 temple and bridge colors… that means there are 792 possible combinations to choose from. Even if I wore a different pair every day, it would take me over two years to try them all (lol). The pair I chose has an inverted triangle shape, ginger-colored lenses, and gold frame parts. Just looking at it, it seems to give off a strong aura, but when I put it on, it blends perfectly with my face. True to the tagline, “Eyewear that doesn’t overpower your outfit, but quietly refines your presence and impression,” it blends gently and effortlessly into my everyday style.

Joining the ranks of the top nations.
It was the morning of June 15, on my way to a photo shoot, as I passed through Shibuya Station. Every time the light turned green, crowds of soccer fans gathered in the middle of the scramble intersection, chanting "Go Japan!" The match ended in a draw. Still, I think it was the kind of game that made you want to celebrate wildly. Seeing that scene out of the corner of my eye, I felt a sense of pride, thinking, “The Japanese national team has come this far.”
Timberland
Timberland Shoes
For your feet this summer.
Tassel loafers with fringe. At first glance, they look like elegant leather shoes, but a closer look at the soles reveals they’re quite different from the ordinary ones. The sole features the same rubber lug sole as Timberland’s iconic “3-Eye” model. The combination of a refined loafer with a rugged sole gives the shoe an appearance that seems almost like a loafer version of the “3-Eye.” While loafer-style sneakers have been gaining traction in the footwear industry lately, this style leans a bit more toward classic leather shoes. Yet, true to Timberland’s roots in work boots, it still carries a certain rugged charm. It requires less maintenance than leather shoes but isn’t as casual as sneakers. This perfect balance is exactly what makes these loafers the perfect choice for this summer.

Amphora Plate
Souvenirs from my trip to Tohoku.
I recently visited “FOLKS STORE” in Sendai, Miyagi, for the first time during Golden Week. It’s a one-stop shop for everything related to clothing, food, and lifestyle—stocked with clothing, home goods, pottery, and books—where you can even enjoy coffee and natural wine. Apparently, most of their merchandise is sourced from Portland, and the store had a laid-back atmosphere reminiscent of the American West Coast. I picked up this plate at “FOLKS STORE.” It’s made by “Anfora,” a ceramics manufacturer founded in Mexico in 1920. Each piece is unique, with blue speckles scattered across a white background that give it a truly lovely look. It measures 19 cm in diameter, making it just the right size for serving toast. It’s not flashy, but eating breakfast on this plate puts me in a good mood right after waking up. By the way, the store stocks “Anfora” items about once every six months. Since they can’t guarantee the same items will be restocked, it’s best to grab one right then and there if it catches your eye.

Cash & Barba T-shirt
A T-shirt that melts.
Before,This articleWhen I interviewed Daisuke Genma, he spoke passionately about a fabric called “Sea Island Cotton.” I’d been curious about it ever since, and that’s when I came across this T-shirt from Cash & Barba. Made from the finest Sea Island cotton from the Caribbean and knitted with one of the world’s highest gauges for natural fabrics, the fabric is incredibly light and smooth. Despite its thinness, it feels substantial, and its comfort against the skin rivals that of silk. What’s more, it seems to become even softer and fluffier with each wash. Another key feature is that it’s designed so that the collar and hem peek out just right when paired with the brand’s knitwear. At first glance, it looks quite ordinary. But in the end, it’s clothes like this—where attention has been paid to every detail—that end up staying with you the longest.

A few friends and I got together to watch the livestream of their final concert. Realizing that this was the end for "Arashi"—a presence I’d always taken for granted—really brought me to tears. They were an irreplaceable group that defined an era. Thank you so much for everything.

This Is Never That Sweat Shorts
Surprisingly rare?

Tomatoes!
Summers have been terrifyingly hot lately, haven’t they? Since I love being outdoors, sunglasses are a must-have for me, and I also enjoy them as a fashion accessory. This summer, I decided to take a chance and try something a little different, so I picked out these. They’re aviator sunglasses from Cutler and Gross. They have a narrow bridge and large, teardrop-shaped lenses. The design is so bold that it’s almost funny to see myself wearing them, and the color is even called “Tomato.” True to its name, it’s a translucent, vibrant red that actually looks pretty good on me. I tend to go for simple things, but lately I’ve been in the mood to wear something flashy without hesitation every once in a while.
