フジロック現地インタビュー。苗場の熱のなかで聞いた、3組が鳴らした音楽とフェスの余韻。

ボーカルのエリザベスはきっと晴れの女神。ライブが始まると豪雨から一転、次第に晴れ間が戻ってきました。この不安定なお天気模様はちょっと彼らの歌とも似通っているような…。RED MARQUEEで確かな存在感を放ったザ・ベス、インタヴューはバンドメンバー全員で受けてくれました。

ベン： ホテルのビュッフェで食べたよ。でも、ブログの読者なら知ってると思うけど、厳格なルールがあって、その日の朝ごはんについては当日は絶対に書かないんだ。実は、みんなが次の日もまたブログを読みに来てくれるようにするための仕掛けなんだけどね。

Ben： Yeah, yeah. I ate at the hotel buffet. But as you know, if you’re a reader of the blog, there’s a very strict policy that I don’t talk about breakfast on the day of having it. So you know, it’s just a way of getting people to come back and read the blog the next day.

ベン： 三角形のご飯たべたよ。そう、おにぎり！

Ben： I had a rice triangle. Yeah, an onigiri.

エリザベス・ストークス（以下、エリザベス）： 正直、かなり緊張してたの。だって、裏側ではみんながすごくたくさん作業をしてくれていて、それが最終的にステージ上のたった1時間に凝縮される感じがするから。でも、本当に楽しめたし、オーディエンスもすごく温かかった。みんなはどう感じたの？

Elizabeth Stokes： Well, if I’m honest, um, I was quite nervous just ‘cause it feels like there’s a lot of work and everyone behind the scenes is doing a lot of work, and then it all comes down to kind of one hour on stage. But it was honestly very fun, and the audience was very warm. How did you guys feel?

トリスタン・デック（以下、トリスタン）： 手拍子とか拍手してくれる感じ、すごく好きなんだ。ポジティブなエネルギーをたくさんもらえるし、次の曲をちゃんと待ってくれる。今回事前に会場をまわれて、他のバンドでそういう光景を見たから理解できたけど、初見だったらちょっと戸惑ってたかもしれない。でも、素直に楽しめたよ。

Tristan Deck： Uh, I really like the way that everyone claps, it gives you so much positive energy, and then waits patiently for the next song. I think if I hadn’t seen that with some other bands, I might be a little bit confused by that. But because I’ve seen it, uh, I really enjoy it.

トリスタン： アジアン・カンフー・ジェネレーションとか。

Tristan： Asian Kung-Fu Generation.

エリザベス： そういう反応があるっていうのは聞いたことあったんだよね。いまトリスタンが言っていた、拍手して待つ、みたいなやつ。でも実はニュージーランドも似ていて、同じように拍手して、その後は待つ感じなの。私たちって内弁慶タイプの国民性というか。何かをすごく強く感じていても、それを必ずしも表に出すわけじゃないんだよね。

Elizabeth： I guess we’d heard about that behavior, the kind of like Tristan said, where you kind of applaud and wait. But the thing is, it’s actually not that different in New Zealand. In New Zealand, people will also, they’ll clap and then kind of wait. But it’s like we’re quite an internal people, I feel like. So you can feel something very strongly, but you don’t necessarily express it.

ジョナサン・ピアース（以下、ジョナサン）： フェスでプレイすると、結成したての頃のことを思い出すんだ。当時の目標は、とにかく自分たちのいちばんハイエネルギーな部分を前面に出すこと、みたいな感じだったからさ。

Jonathan Pearce： When we play a festival it reminds me a little bit of what we used to do when we were, uh, just starting out. And, you know, the goal was just, like, to put forward, like the most infectious, high-energy version of ourselves or something like that. 

エリザベス： アルバムを作ることも含めて、それを世に送り出すまでにはいろんな作業が積み重なっていて…。聴いてくれた人たちからのリアクションが届き始めて、みんなが自分たちのやっていることに共感してくれてるんだって分かる瞬間がある。私にとって音楽を作るうえで、その瞬間がとても特別なことなの。

Elizabeth： Including making the album and then all the work that goes into putting something out into the world that… Yeah, it does happen and you start to hear from people and that they are connecting with what you’re doing. And that is very special.

トリスタン： 音楽で表現する方が、言葉で話すよりも簡単に伝わることがある気がするんだ。ペンギンが陸にいる時って、氷の上をよちよち歩いてて、ちょっとぎこちない感じじゃない？ でも水の中に入った瞬間、すごくエレガントになるでしょ。あんな感じなんだよね。

Tristan： I find it’s almost easier to communicate through a musical performance than speaking to someone sometimes. You know like when a penguin is on land and they’re kind of like walking around on the ice and they’re like a little bit gumby, and then they get into the water and they’re so elegant.

エリザベス： なんてエレガントなドラマーなんでしょう（笑）。

Elizabeth： You’re an elegant, beautiful drummer.
