A Look at the Current State of Fashion from Seoul, South Korea.

A Look at the Current State of Fashion from Seoul, South Korea.

〈DAIWA PIER39〉 made its debut in South Korea by hosting a pop-up event in Seoul. While its lineup draws attention every season in Japan, what kind of reaction will it receive in South Korea, a hub for trendsetters? So, we traveled there to experience the excitement of the pop-up firsthand. We also visited three shops that caught our eye to explore the current state of the South Korean fashion scene.

Unique shops in three different areas.

This time, we visited three select shops located in the Banpo, Seongsu, and Buam neighborhoods of Seoul. As we explored their product lineups and popular items, we discovered not only each shop’s unique focus but also the distinct atmosphere of each neighborhood. Let’s take a look at Seoul’s current fashion scene through these three shops.

Shop 1_KhakisThe vintage trend sweeping through Seoul.

Once lined with small local factories, Seongsu has been transformed through redevelopment into a hub for fashion and art. From flagship stores of up-and-coming Korean brands and global labels to cafes and galleries, the area has become a trendsetting hotspot where style-conscious young people gather. The second flagship store of *Khakis* opened here in 2024. It’s located in a building that houses *thisisneverthat* on the upper floor and *PIZZA SLICE*—a brand familiar to Japanese customers—in the basement.

The spacious interior was designed by “COM,” a design studio known for its work with many popular Korean shops. The layout can be changed using movable fixtures, and the space also hosts pop-up shops and music events. The sophisticated sales floor features a variety of brands in addition to , but just as in Japan, the running boom has made outdoor and sports brands particularly popular. Among these, modern European apparel seems to be especially in demand.

What I found interesting while talking with the staff at 〈Karkis〉 was that vintage fashion—which hadn’t really caught on in Korea—has recently been gaining attention little by little. Korean fashion trends change at a dizzying pace. At the heart of this must be a desire to dress differently from others, and the aged look and stories behind vintage pieces may align well with that sensibility. 〈Karkis〉 is known for designs that infuse a modern sensibility into a vintage foundation. Its popularity also gave me a sense of the current state of the Korean fashion scene.

The cow suede has been garment-washed to give it a vintage-like texture. The checkered flannel lining feels great against the skin, and the sleeve linings are made of a thick cotton-rayon blend—details like these show the care that went into every aspect of the design. With a slightly shorter length and a relaxed, roomy silhouette, this jacket is perfectly in line with contemporary trends. It’s a piece you’ll cherish for years to come. Jacket ₩1,090,000

Made with Polartec 200 Series fleece, which offers excellent insulation and breathability. Its soft, smooth texture ensures exceptional comfort. The zipper pulls are made of leather, and the snap buttons on the pockets feature the “Karkis” logo. The finish reflects the brand’s commitment to uncompromising attention to detail. With a color palette that complements any outfit, you’ll have a hard time choosing. Fleece Jacket ₩259,000

This cotton-cashmere blend offers a soft, cozy feel. Released last year, it has repeatedly sold out and been restocked, and this season, new colors have been added to the lineup. With a comfortable, just-right fit that makes you want to slip it on, the striped pattern adds just the right amount of flair to any outfit. You’ll naturally reach for it as the season progresses. It’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Beanie ₩79,000
