Lecture 4: Michihiko Kurihara
Look out for Pee Wee Herman, who has a cult following in the U.S."

Pee-Wee Herman T-SHIRT

chestnut fieldI only have three of them, but I started collecting them about a year ago, Pee Wee Herman (a character played by Paul Reubens. An American comedian who was active mainly in the '80s, especially in the '80s.' He was arrested in 1991 for indecent exposure and temporarily suspended his career, but was revived for supporting roles in Tim Burton's "Batman Returns," etc. In 2002, he was arrested again for possession of child pornography and other crimes).

section (of an orange, etc.)You've got some great stuff (laughs). How did you start collecting?

chestnut fieldI don't remember how I first became interested in them, but last year when I went to Sapporo on a business trip, I picked one up at a vintage clothing store called "Mongos," and I've been buying them whenever I find them. I have been buying them on Etsy and other American sites for $120-$150.

section (of an orange, etc.)That much?

chestnut fieldYes, I do. And I have always liked the motif of "free ____" (meaning "free ____"), which can be seen in O.J. Simpson's and James Brown's works, and which has been a common motif since the 1980s.

mountain fieldThe big one is probably the Hells Angels (an international biker team from the U.S. with over 20,000 members, including the lower organizations).

the recently departed (and buried or cremated, etc.)Sonny Barger (author of the international best-selling autobiography "Hell's Angel: The Life and Times of Sonny Barger and the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club" and a decade-plus prison term as (The Hells Angels' highest-ranking executive), right? . those T-shirts are pretty expensive, aren't they?

chestnut fieldI'm also looking for a printed mag shot (photo taken by the police at the time of arrest) photo.

the recently departed (and buried or cremated, etc.)I've seen the mag shot ones too.

chestnut fieldThis one with the "Stanley Dezantis" tag (an apparel brand named after himself by an American actor and businessman who ran a novelty brand after his retirement) is probably official because of the body of the body.

mountain fieldI think it would be interesting to have a huge collection of Stanley DeZantis T-shirts. Pee Wee Herman isn't the only one who's seen a spike in prices, is he?

chestnut fieldYes, that's right. I guess it means that not only band T-shirts but also character T-shirts from the '80s and '90s are becoming popular these days.

mountain fieldI have three children, and I would never wear a T-shirt of a guy who was caught with child pornography. I'm also disgusted by the "kuri" (collector) who collects them.

all of us(Laughter).

chestnut fieldTim Burton's first feature film was called "Pee-wee Herman's Big Adventure" starring him, so maybe he has a cult following.

mountain fieldI love Tim Burton....

Fujiwara:Kuri knows the prices in the U.S. from his buying, so I guess his selections will be different from the others.

mountain field. but I don't like it (laughs).

all of us(Laughter).

, probably military-rated, unseen Patagonia."

Patagonia INTEGRAL JACKET

chestnut fieldNext up is a model called the "Integral Jacket" from Patagonia. The inline model has the brand logo embroidered on the chest, and the country of production is no longer the U.S., but the one we have today was made in the U.S. in '08, even though it was made later than the inline model. The one I brought today was made in the U.S.A. in spite of the fact that it was made in '08.

chestnut fieldFurthermore, the fact that the black one is made of stretch material while the gray one is not, makes me think that it was made in small batches on order from the military or government, similar to the MARS and others.

mountain fieldAfter MARS, I suspect it's something rare when it's "Patagonia" but without logo or tag.

chestnut fieldWell, I think that's almost the correct interpretation.

section (of an orange, etc.)These unseen items are still available, aren't they?

the recently departed (and buried or cremated, etc.)If it's made in USA without a logo , that means it's pretty likely, right?

section (of an orange, etc.)Did you get it in Japan?

chestnut fieldBoth were bought in the U.S. , although at different times.

mountain field. But at this stage, we can only speculate that it might have been used for military purposes. . That's great, isn't it? That's the best part of vintage clothing.

Fujiwara:Is there any possibility of a sample or something?

chestnut fieldI guess not.

Fujiwara:That's right. If it's a sample, it's all labeled as a sample, in the case of Patagonia.

section (of an orange, etc.)How do you find these irregularities?

chestnut fieldI'm not looking for something in particular, but when I find it, I notice that it's different. . I don't know the details, so I can only speculate. However, I don't know the details, so I can only speculate.

'Remake or locally made , military jacket with no details.'

UNKNOWN MILITARY JACKET

chestnut fieldThe third one is also a US Army flight-type jacket, although I don't know the details . I found it in the U.S. about two years ago, and at the time I couldn't wear it because of my body shape (laughs), but recently I finally got around to wearing it.

mountain field(Looking at the name plate on his chest) Isn't this something Gerald made up on his own?

chestnut fieldWhat do you think?

mountain fieldIt was Gerald's graduation project from clothing school, wasn't it (laughs)?

all of us(Laughter).

chestnut fieldAt first, I thought it might have been remade from a lamprey, but when I compared it with the lamprey of the same period that I had on hand, the details and minutiae were completely different.

section (of an orange, etc.)Did you get both pieces at the same time?

chestnut fieldYes . I searched for the name of the unit embroidered on the chest, but it didn't show up. It is impossible that the name of the unit does not appear, so it is possible that it was made as a costume for a movie or something.

Fujiwara:Indeed . What kind of camo pattern is this (the camo one)?

the recently departed (and buried or cremated, etc.)I think they call it a pastel duck.

section (of an orange, etc.)Heh . I didn't even know the name of the camouflage. I wonder when it was dated?

the recently departed (and buried or cremated, etc.)It seems to be a pattern from '68 onwards. I'm guessing it's from the Nam War (Vietnam War) era?

mountain fieldDo you mean locally made (personal equipment that does not have a mil-spec and is set up by tailors in the frontline country or neighboring countries)?

the recently departed (and buried or cremated, etc.)I have a feeling that there is a line in the sand.

mountain fieldFind Gerald and it will all be fine (laughs).

chestnut fieldHow do you find them (laughs)?

mountain fieldWhen I wear that, it kind of makes Kris look like Gerald.

section (of an orange, etc.)Mr. Yamada, you drink too much (laughs).

I'm interested in western wear with a twist that isn't straight forward."

50's LEVI'S LADY'S WESTERN PANTS

chestnut fieldThe last one is a pair of women's pants from Levi's Western Line , in a paisley pattern. I found some deadstock a while ago, and kept one for myself because the pattern was interesting and it was in a size I could wear, a W30.

section (of an orange, etc.)What decade is it from?

chestnut field. as far as the tag and flasher, I'm pretty sure it's from the 50's.

mountain fieldI've never seen this flasher before . But just looking at the flasher, it has a 70's feel to it.

the recently departed (and buried or cremated, etc.)Surely, without the short horns on the inside tag, you would think it was 70s. But, there were patterned items like this in the short horn era.

section (of an orange, etc.)Is there a reason for this specific wing-like part of the pocket?

Fujiwara:Perhaps it is the design.

chestnut fieldThe zipper is broken and needs to be repaired. I don't care much about the tops of women's wear, but I have always been reluctant to wear the bottoms, but I wanted to wear these pants. When I tried them on, I found they were pretty cool, and the shape was nice.

mountain fieldAre you going to take that flasher off?

chestnut fieldI'll keep it in case I need to keep it, though.

mountain fieldGive it to me (laughs).

all of us(Laughter).

Fujiwara:The lot number is listed as "5990X". I've never seen this before either.

mountain fieldI guess it's nice to see something for the first time. Isn't this one of the best things about secondhand clothing?

chestnut fieldI know, right? . it's a great feeling when you find something you've never seen before.

section (of an orange, etc.). I have the impression that Kuri has been paying a lot of attention to westerns and ranching lately.

chestnut fieldYes . However, I'm interested in things that are a little out of the ordinary, rather than straightforward. For example, a jacket with a 50s motif but made of a different material in a different decade. . I still feel that one has to be serious to wear a straightforward style.
