I would like to attach my phone to this strap and hang it over a sewer hole in New York or Paris.

I was curious about the idea of how Mr. Maruyama would use the "Yosemite Mobile Strap" when he gets it, so I came to talk to him. Earlier, you were concerned about the durability of the part that connects to the phone cover.
Maruyama:. you're worried that it might break at the critical moment. On a boat, for example, there are times when a joint part breaks off. I have actually had problems with joints breaking off in situations like on a boat. I often shoot with a smartphone in one hand in unstable places.
. You can't really know what you're going to cover until you've actually been there, can you? The new "Yosemite Mobile Strap" is made of a proprietary attachment made of high-density nylon and a strap based on a climbing rope, making it strong and sturdy.
Maruyama:As for my way of doing things, I aim to do the best, or better, way I can do on the spot. If I can use something so tough , I will try to see what kind of shooting I can do with it.

For example, what kind of photography method do you have in mind?
Maruyama:It would be interesting to hold the "Yosemite Mobile Strap" with this phone attached in your hand and hang it in a sewer in New York or Paris or something where there is a gap where the grating is stuck just enough for the phone to go through. It would be useful for those situations where you just need to reach out a little further or be a little thinner to get the shot.
Do you sometimes just pull out your phone and take a picture? In such cases, I think a mobile strap would allow for quick action before taking the picture.... In Mr. Maruyama's case, I think that the moment is the decisive factor in a heated exchange.
Maruyama:I understand the nuance of capturing the moment you are talking about, but in my case, it is more important to capture it naturally. So, there are times when I make it stand out against the grain.

You chose black for everyday use, but you also wanted a flashy color, so you chose a striking orange from among the many available. And while many people wear the strap diagonally across their shoulders, Mr. Maruyama chose to wear it around his neck without hesitation.
Maruyama:. I think the colors you choose and the way you hang them will depend on how you use them. For example, this key strap from Carhartt was used when I covered the demonstration in Hong Kong. I had assumed that the fluorescent vests were the uniforms of the press and that I would be able to buy them locally, but I was unable to prepare them because I had to go straight into the press coverage. . At that time, I used it as a substitute for the press vest. The orange color was deliberately conspicuous, and it helped. When I was actually surrounded by police, I said, "Press, press! and I escaped without incident.
It is used as a sort of lifeline to prevent accidental shooting. Even in the military, orange is used as an emergency color.
Maruyama:Basically, I use a Handycam to prevent camera shake during interviews, but there are times when I shoot with my smartphone. If I think there is a strange guy at the end of the street, I sometimes leave my smartphone's video app running and approach him while taking pictures. Nowadays, people use their smartphones in everyday life, and it is more unusual for them not to have a smartphone. . Therefore, I think it is not out of place to wear a colorful strap like this to intentionally stand out.

Maruyama:During interviews, I sometimes use a sub cell phone to take hidden pictures while I take pictures with a phone that is made to stand out like this. . I use the phone in different ways depending on the situation.
I see that you sometimes take hidden photos with your phone during interviews...?
Maruyama:There are many techniques, like using an app that looks like a movie but takes pictures. There are other ways to do it that I can't talk about here, not to mention silent apps (laughs). To be honest, once the photos are taken, it is often possible to publish them, depending on the negotiations that take place later. The most important thing is to ask openly if you can take pictures. Most of the time, that will solve the problem.

When asked about the use of the leather hook parts to which carabiners and other items can be attached, he replied, "Maybe hotel room keys. Also, if there are children at the interview destination, I would attach a key chain to it and give it to them as a souvenir," said Maruyama.
