Maximum evolution with minimum improvement.
What are the major changes from the existing items in your first collection for the spring/summer 2022 season?
Stephan:There are two things. One is to keep in mind the roots of the 80s and 90s. The second is to mix the street culture and subcultures that I have cultivated.
Can you explain one by one?
Stephan:It is fashion, so there is nothing wrong with following trends. However, when I was looking through old GRAMICHI catalogs, I found that the 80s and 90s were really cool. So, I decided to keep the originals first.
As for packaging what I have cultivated, I asked a former client of mine to create a graphic T-shirt for me.

"Tongue in cheek" and laid back t-shirts. Both fabrics are organic cotton. The gray T-shirts are product dyed for a vintage look. Each ¥6,600
Did you have any requests when you asked us to do the graphics?
Stephan:There is a word in English, "Tongue in cheek", which means "tease" or "joke". It means "to make fun of" or "to joke around with." The designs created by Sean (Stussy) in the 90's were exactly like that, so we decided to incorporate that taste into our designs. Of course, there is also the more traditional logo design.
Also, there are garment-dyed (product-dyed) T-shirts. They look a bit like old clothes. I think it also gives off a 90's vibe.
Which item best expresses your desire to "cherish the original"?
Stephan:Gadget Pants" and "Gramichi Pants."
Are "gadget pants" a new item?
Stephan:Yes, I did. These pants themselves were made based on the ones in the 1995 catalog. In terms of details, first of all, the pockets are made of canvas. Nowadays, cotton twill fabrics are more common, but in the past, canvas was used. After all, canvas is very durable. I think these pants are a good representation of the "cherish the original" concept. Also, the webbing belt is placed on the pockets so that carabiners can be attached and water bottles can be hung from them. The pockets are also large enough to hold chalk for climbing. While they can be worn on skateboards or in the city, I think these pants were made from a climber's perspective and have become iconic.

The "Gadget Pants" feature large pockets on both sides to accommodate a variety of gadgets. While organic cotton twill fabric is used, tough canvas is used for the pockets, which are subject to heavy loads. It is product-dyed to allow it to age well. Each color ¥12,100

This is another item that Stefan has put a lot of effort into. It is a reissue of the Jam Shorts, a masterpiece that GRAMICHI developed when the company was first founded, and is wider and easier to move in than many other shorts. The material used is the same durable ripstop as at the time. They can also be worn as a set-up with a jacket made of the same material. Jacket ¥19,800, Shorts ¥11,000
How about "Gramichi Pants," your most popular item?
Stephan:To be honest, these pants are close to a mature state. So we have not changed the silhouette or anything. The biggest change is that we started using organic cotton.
Why did you switch to organic cotton for your signature item, "Gramichi pants"?
Stephan:Certainly, there was a way to change only minor items to organic cotton. However, that would not have made enough of an impact. We thought that using organic cotton for Gramichi's signature pants would make a big impact. By the way, we also use organic cotton for other items besides "Gramichi Pants. I believe that environmental awareness is indispensable nowadays. From now on, brands other than ours need to take it more and more for granted.
