Luxurious moments in Tokyo and Hachijojima. A 2-day/1-night trip with former islanders.

The Izu Islands lie off the coast of Tokyo. The islands consist of more than 100 inhabited islands, including Oshima, Niijima, and Miyakejima, as well as other uninhabited islands. One of these islands, Hachijo-jima, has the second largest population after Oshima. Kaito Sasamoto a.k.a. KOZAKANA was born and raised there. In mid-September, I headed to Hachijojima with KOZAKANA-kun in tow, hoping to learn about the charms of Oragamachi.

Following the island's style, we drink in succession.

It was time to eat, and at 7:00 p.m. we made a pit stop at Aigae Suisan, a restaurant that offers a wide variety of local products and is visited by both locals and tourists alike.

Kusaya is the specialty of "Aigae Suisan." In addition, there are other local dishes budo and creative menus using local ingredients.

. You can't start without eating kusa-ya," he said. My grandfather eats kusa-ya every day. I love it, too," he said, as he expertly loosened the kusaya that had come to the table. The staff members also took a bite of the wedge as recommended. But it was not long before they thought, "...yes, ...it's totally good! But some of them gave up after a few seconds. KOZAKANA said, "This smell is good, isn't it? Yes, I knew kusaya was kusaya. Please give it a try.

KOZAKANA-kun said, "Hashigo-zake is the norm for islanders. Following his lead, we left the first restaurant and went to a popular local yakiniku restaurant called "San-nen-nen-no Ufuki (The Three-Year-Old Affair)," which he had visited five years ago when he went back to his hometown. On this day, too, the place was packed with locals.

The cosmopolitan menu is full of items that "you wouldn't be able to eat at these prices if you were in the heart of the city".

Surprisingly, there are many yakiniku restaurants on Hachijojima. KOZAKANA's favorite, tang and harami, are served quickly, followed by a quick beer, and then we go to the third restaurant!

The last restaurant we visited was "Izakaya ichiban". This izakaya, run by the energetic master and mother, is a place where you can enjoy karaoke. KOZAKANA usually hates to sing karaoke, but perhaps it was the liberating feeling of being on an island that made him so, and on this day he sang one song with a shy smile on his face.

While enjoying karaoke, guests can also enjoy island cuisine such as Hachijo Island's famous Ashitaba Tempura, Neri (island okra), and egg omelet with island chili peppers.

One thing to note about Hachijojima's Hashigo-zake is that it is especially difficult to catch a cab late at night. . So those who live far from their hotels should take that time into consideration.
