A new book on BEAMS, edited with director Motoki Yoshikawa. Chapter 8: "Schadaraparr Bose on the Importance of Sticking to the Basics

Fashion in the 2000s is once again on the rise. This season's BEAMS collection is also based on the theme of "Y2K" and focuses on the culture of the 2000s, which emerged after the 1990s. What kind of behind-the-scenes stories can be found in the clothes that have been created in this way? Together with Motoki Yoshikawa, director of the men's casual department, we explore the strategies for this season's original items.
Our guest this time is Mr. Bose of "Schadaraparr," a milestone in the Japanese hip-hop scene, who talks a lot about the 1990s and 2000s, as well as his own views on fashion.

When I put it on, I realize that the clothes were made in 2023.

Have there been any changes in your impression of BEAMS when you actually put on the sleeves of its clothes?

Bose:I thought it suited me so well that I wanted to wear it as is and go home.

Yoshikawa:Did you come to the site today dressed like that? It looked so good on him.

Bose:But it has been casually updated, hasn't it? People tend to think they are the same, but they are a little different. I think I look much the same as I did in the magazines of the 90s, but when I wear the clothes, I realize that they were made in 2023.

Is that supposed to lift your spirits?

Bose:That's right. And the content has changed, too. The quality has improved a lot.

Yoshikawa:We've made minor updates to both the sewing and the patterns.

Bose:I think that is important. Rather than being told that the style is always different, I think it is cool that the style has remained the same from long ago, but the quality has improved.

Lastly, what do you expect from BEAMS in the future?

Bose:While they say that it is cool to stay the same, I think it is easier for business to do fashion if they make new things one after another and make new things every year. It is the same with music. People say to us, "You make the same kind of music every time," but in our minds, we are making something new. I think we are very similar in that respect.

What I am trying to say is that even if you think they are the same, if you want to buy them, please buy them (laughs). (Laughs.) Clothes and music need people to receive them. That's why we make people feel happy. We will continue to create what fits the mood of the moment.

Reflecting on the dialogue...

I actually listened to these artists in my youth, so I had a great time. I think the topics of street culture were very informative, and I learned a lot from them. Another important part of our clothes-making process is to talk about how "things that don't seem to have changed are changing. We are particular about details such as materials, sewing, and silhouettes even in our basic products, so I was glad to hear that they appreciated our work (Yoshikawa).
