- This year you played the lead role for the first time in the film "Mendou na Hito". Was there any difference in the way you acted on stage and in front of the camera?
I don't have much experience with video yet, so I can't say anything about it, but it was totally different. However, there are some commonalities with the experience I have gained in Kabuki, and I would like to be able to demonstrate that in the video.
- I think Kabuki and video works can give back to each other.
Yes, they are. They are separate but connected, so I think there is a good interaction. Even on the Kabuki stage, fine gestures and unseen theatrical performances are important elements, such as the expression of emotional transitions. In these areas, too, I can learn a lot from video works. Next year, many of the video works in which I have performed will be released. I would like to continue to perform in video works, and I would also like to try my hand at contemporary theater.

- The arrows of challenge seem to point in many directions.
There are many things I would like to try. For example, music. I want to learn an instrument and I want to sing. Also, I like perfumes, so I would like to try perfuming. I would like to try many things with a broad perspective, not limited to being a Kabuki actor. I want to release what comes out of me from within. For me, that is living. It is hard when you cannot express yourself.
- For Chinnosuke, expression is a part of his daily life, isn't it?
I feel like I am living the character of "Chinosuke Kataoka" in dramas and movies. It is a thrilling life, full of comedy and tragedy, and I do not know what will happen next, but I believe that it is up to me.
- You are celebrating the 20th anniversary of your career.
Surprisingly, I have no goals or dreams. I just enjoy the moment as I am and am grateful to be alive in my acting. That is all. My life in the entertainment industry has a long way to go, so I think it is more important to live in the present moment than in the future. However, I want to continue to challenge myself in things that interest me. Awards and recognition will come later. I simply want to continue to express myself honestly to myself.
