-The grungy styling is cool, how did you feel about wearing the T-shirt?
I really liked the fabric, not too thin and not too heavy, just right. I usually like vintage T-shirts and often buy them, but I also like the fact that this T-shirt looks like it will soon develop a vintage-like texture as it is washed.
-I see that you usually wear the band's vintage T-shirts a lot.
Yes, I did. I used to buy vintage T-shirts at stores in Harajuku.
-What is the point of today's coordination?
The base color is black, but I chose leather pants instead of denim for the bottom and a leopard print jacket so that it would not be too simple. I like to wear band T-shirts oversized like today. I often wear a large T-shirt with a slip dress that looks like underwear. I like styling it in such a way that you can't tell whether it is pajamas or outerwear.
-I thought the graphics, with artwork by contemporary artist Mike Kelley, fit Ashley's vibe perfectly.
It's an iconic design that everyone has seen at least once. I've always liked this kind of character-based design, and since it's Sonic Youth, it's a no-brainer.
-Do you like Sonic Youth?
I don't know much about Sonic Youth, but I love Kim Gordon (a member of Sonic Youth), I really like 90's culture, and people like Courtney Love and Sofia Coppola were also icons for me. I am so influenced by them that I used to work for the brand that Kim started.
-What made you fall in love with Kim Gordon?
I first heard about her when I was about 17 or 18 years old, when I read a book about the Riot Girls (a group of female punk rock bands and others who banded together to create a movement that became an influential social movement). When I learned about Kim's impact on the Riot Girls, I became interested and fell in love with her.
-I see. When I heard that, it made sense to me that that is why Ashley's style exudes such a cultural atmosphere.
I am probably influenced by many other places, but I still think it is very cool that Kim has his own way of being.
