PROFILE

Yuhi Ozaki
designer

After working as a buyer at a major select store, he was involved in the launch of a number of brands before launching his own brand, Sankakke, in 2012 with the concept of "carefully making beautiful clothes," and since 2002 he has also been involved in Young & Olsen the Dry Goods Store. Since 2002, he has also been involved in Young & Olsen The Dry Goods Store.

For you, a watch is a necessity for coordination, isn't it?

Ozaki: Sometimes I forget to put it on, but then I feel very uncomfortable. I feel as if my coordination is incomplete, or my mind is somewhat soppy. Just like choosing shoes to match my style, I always think of things like, "I'm going to wear this watch today because I'm going to wear this kind of outfit," or conversely, "I'm going to wear this outfit because I want to wear this watch.

When do you wear your military watch?

Ozaki: It's a bit of a cliché, but I wear it when I am wearing military pants. I also wear my military watch with dress clothes. It's a very simple design, so it goes well with jackets.

What do you find attractive about military watches among the various types of watches, such as dress watches and sports watches?

Ozaki: It is simple, after all. Since it is a military watch, it is forbidden to add unnecessary decorations. I am attracted to the minimal design, which is made only for the prerequisites of accurate timekeeping, durability, and visibility. The U.S. military's watches, in particular, are simple to the point of being almost effortless. Even in uniforms, there are parts that are the cornerstones of various designs, and I find them cool. It's like you make a clear distinction between necessary details and functions and those that are not, and then you go all out with the necessary precision.

What is your impression of Hamilton's military watches?

Ozaki: I like vintage watches, but I often look at current watches as well. I think it is quite common for the design of old masterpieces to be changed when they are made to today's specifications, but "Hamilton" watches are made in a way that preserves the mood of the time. That's what I like about it. When I saw this Khaki When I saw this "Khaki Field Mecha," I remember thinking, "This is very hot. That's how much I pay attention to "Hamilton" and check their products.

Why is that?

Ozaki: The first "nice watch" I ever bought was a "Ventura" by Hamilton. It was a commemorative model for the 70th anniversary of Elvis Presley's birth. I was in my first year of high school, and I kept looking at it by my bedside. So it's a brand that I'm very attached to.

Archival "Khaki Field Mecha" watch (made in 1972).

This is an archived "Khaki Field Mecha" watch from 1972. Compared to the current version, it shows how much Hamilton values the designs of the past.

Ozaki: The archive has a slightly domed windshield, whereas the current one is flat. I wonder if the current one is also slightly larger in size.

The case size of the archive is 35 mm, whereas the current case is 38 mm.

Ozaki: It's a normal size. If this becomes 42mm, it seems a little too big, but 38mm is good. Also, I like the paint job.

That's right. This method uses steam to evaporate the lacquer and spray it, resulting in a very thin film that is highly durable and gives a subdued look without a glossy finish.

Ozaki: I am also attracted to this paint. I like black and silver in military watches, and when I see such colors, I buy them. I especially like black.

There is also a bronze case.

Ozaki: True. But I like that "Hamilton" doesn't think in luxury terms. There are watches that are more and more luxury-oriented and gilded, even though they are active watches. But the "Khaki Field Mecha" has a down-to-earth feel. It's really good. It's really good.

What did you have in mind when you coordinated today?

Ozaki: I thought it would be a bit too military to match. In my mind, "Khaki Field Mecha" has an outdoor image, so I matched it with a vintage mountain parka. If I put too much thought into it, it would look a bit overdone, so I tried to find the right balance.

Don't be a cosplayer.

Ozaki: That's one thing, though. For me, I like to wear a jungle fatigues jacket and feel the equipment of the time. But if I think of it as a fashion item, I want to take it out and put it in. I think it's fun to think about coordinating while maintaining a balance in this way.

The simplicity of the watch is the reason for the blank space.

Ozaki: I think young people don't need anything else as long as they have this one. It is not embarrassing to wear it anywhere, and it goes with everything. I think it is a really nice watch.
