As the name suggests, the "Aventrail Shoe" is a shoe version of the "Aventrail" sandal.

The Aventrail was first released in June 2024 as a "sandal for running in the mountains" with an excellent fit thanks to Teva's unique W strapping system, and it created a stir among gearaholic trail runners. The sandals were a hit with gear-holic trail run enthusiasts.

In fact, many runners have run in the mountains in "Aventrail" and have been fascinated by the comfort of the shoes. One such runner is Rui Ueda, the professional mountain runner who modeled for the visual above. In an interview for a Huinum article at the time, he said, "The openness of being able to feel the wind on your toes while running is something that only sandals can provide. I was able to run more comfortably than I had imagined.

The "Aventrail Shoe" inherits the features of the "Aventrail" such as the W strapping system, but is rearranged for shoe specifications. What is the comfort of the shoes? Rui Ueda will review it again.

The three of us run in the "Aventrail Shoe" and discuss its comfort.

Easy to fine-tune the fit and smooth to put on and take off.

Enomoto:Teva's new "Aventrail Shoe". How did you feel when you actually ran on the trail wearing these? Rui, please tell us your honest impression.

Rui:My first impression is that they are neutral and comfortable without any peculiarities. I felt that the shape is not too thin, as is often the case with Western brand shoes, and that it easily fits the Japanese foot. I think the silhouette is neither too thin nor too wide, just the right balance.

Yamamoto:The main feature of these shoes is that the fit can be adjusted with straps, not laces. What do you think about that point?

Rui:It's more fine-tuning than you might expect. They are easier to tighten and loosen than regular laces, and they are smoother to put on and take off. For example, when changing shoes during a long race such as a 100-mile race, I think it is a big advantage to be able to do it quickly.

Enomoto:Rui, do you ever re-tighten your shoelaces during a race?

Rui:Not at the moment. But if I decide to challenge a 100-mile race in the future, such a situation may arise.

Yamamoto:I see. With these shoes, it looks like you can easily make adjustments in such situations.

Enomoto:Were there any details that bothered you when you actually hit the trails?

Rui:I liked the fact that the shoe's upper is integrated with the shoe's upper, which reduces pressure and hits the foot less easily.

Yamamoto:If the upper is separated from the shoe tongue, it may slip out of place while running.

Rui:That's right. Moreover, the shoe tongue is moderately padded to reduce pressure when it is over-tightened. This is another important point.

Enomoto:What about the material of the upper?

Rui:They are breathable and comfortable against the foot. Some trail shoes may hit the little toes, but these shoes do not have that kind of discomfort. The heel is well held and stable.

Yamamoto:What is the cushioning of the midsole?

Rui:Slightly stiffer impression. But it also feels easy to generate propulsive force. It does not sink in too much, but has just the right amount of resilience, which I think is a good balance.

Enomoto:How about the grip on the outsole?

Rui:Compared to the sandal model that came out last year, the lugs have changed a bit. The lugs are now two-tiered, giving the impression that they are easier to chew on surfaces.

Not only for trail runs, but also for street wear and expeditions!

Yamamoto:What situations would you recommend these shoes for?

Rui:For those who are comfortable with the fit, they will work well for medium to long distance trail runs. The ability to fine-tune the straps, especially in the latter half of the run when swelling occurs, is an attractive feature.

Enomoto:I see. Personally, I think it would be suitable for long distance hiking, travel, and business trips as well as races.

Yamamoto:By the way, Rui, you basically wear your own brand "Ruy" for clothes, but when it comes to shoes, you are a free spirit and wear various brands. What kind of occasions would you like to wear the "Aventrail Shoe"?

Rui:I would like to wear them when relaxing and enjoying a trail run rather than in a race where I have to put a lot of energy into it. I also think they will be useful not only for trail runs but also for jogging on the road.

Enomoto:By the way, is it possible to wear them as street shoes?

Rui:I think they are a great deal of fun. They can be taken on and off more smoothly than ordinary sneakers, so they will be useful for daily use and for traveling on expeditions.

Yamamoto:How do you wear them with the sandal type "Aventrail"?

Rui:For situations where you need to protect your feet, such as on rugged, rocky terrain or on surfaces where tree roots protrude, use the Aventrail Shoe. When you want to feel the wind on your toes and enjoy a sense of freedom, wear the sandal type "Aventrail". It is a good idea to choose between these two types of shoes.

Enomoto:Indeed. Each of them has a different flavor, so you can keep your feet more comfortable if you wear them according to your mood or the occasion.
