How Do You Live?

Far away from AI.
Interview with Daigo, star of the movie "Sheep in a Box", in commemoration of its release.

The news that Daigo of Chidori has landed the lead role in Hirokazu Koreeda's latest film, "Sheep in a Box," has been received with great surprise by the public. Speaking of Daigo, his greatness as a comedian is well known to everyone. So how is he as an actor? The theme of his current film "Sheep in a Box" is "AI and People," a story about a couple who welcome a humanoid in the image of their deceased son. We asked Daigo, who seems to be the furthest away from AI, so to speak, as human as his image in the tea room, some questions about this film.

I wanted to say that the role was dragging.

--Did the director talk with Haruka Ayase (who played the role of husband and wife with Daigo in this film)?

Mr. Ayase and I were talking several times before the show started or something like that. ......, so that I wouldn't hear (laughs). Anyway, I was the only one they didn't let in (laughs).

-In an interview with Ms. Ayase in another media, she said that Daigo was OK with almost anything.

That's right. I think Ayase-san probably had a more difficult role than I did. I was fine with the role as it was. I didn't say, "Let's shoot it again," or "Let's shoot it a little differently. I feel so bad for Ms. Ayase (laughs).

--Did you feel like you were writing a letter of intent?

I don't know to what extent. So I was not asked to create this kind of father figure or this kind of husband figure. But Yamauchi of Kamaitachi saw a preview of the film and said, "If it were Daigo-san, he would move like this, say these lines, and be like this, just like Daigo-san. So there was no need for me to make it so complicated. I think the director left it as it was.

--When you saw the video yourself, did you see Kensuke as a character?

It was the first time for me to see myself like that, and at first I watched the movie thinking, "What if I'm interrupting something? It's like there's a guy like me in the film. It's the future, and he's still wearing geta, or snow shoes, like a manly man (laughs).

--Did you find it easy to switch from your usual variety of work?

In a variety show, if I annoyed someone, the annoyance would be funny, but in that sense, a movie is completely different, so I tried not to get in the way. I was shooting this movie and variety at the same time, and I really wanted to say something like, "It's hard to switch now because I'm doing a movie," or "I'm dragging out the role" (laughs). But the fact that I was able to get into it so easily means that I probably didn't change anything. If I had to talk with an actor in the future about how to put myself into the role, I might laugh at him (laughs).
