PROGRESS FOR 20 YEARS

Design and art, the city and the natural world. YOSHIROTTEN has been crossing and expanding for 20 years.

YOSHIROTTEN is one of Japan's leading artists who continues to expand his field of activity across various fields, from commercial art to contemporary art, as well as music and fashion, throughout Asia and the world. Through two major exhibitions held as the culmination of his long career, we asked him about his thoughts on design, art, and artistic expression, while looking back on his career to date.

Where YOSHIROTTEN is now, as seen through 20 years of career

-The "FUTURE NATURE" exhibition held at the art space "TOLOT / heuristic" in Shinonome attracted a great deal of attention at the time.

The impetus for "FUTURE The impetus for holding "NATURE" came from my desire to create an exhibition that would have an impact, and from my search for something new to express under the theme of connecting nature and the future. If I wanted to put all the energy I had at the time into the exhibition, I needed a space of my own. That's how I came up with "TOLOT / heuristic Heuristic," a huge space that utilized a former warehouse of a printing and bookbinding factory, was used for a multifaceted exhibition that included two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, as well as video and live performances by invited musicians from overseas. From the opening, an astonishing number of visitors came to the exhibition, and we felt an unprecedented level of enthusiasm as various parties and companies from the street to luxury brands, busy celebrities, and even friends gathered in one place on the outskirts of Tokyo. However, as an expression, it was still only a kind of self-introduction, and I remember that for the first time, I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do more of, and my outlook was expanding.

FUTURE NATURE (2018-)"
In 2018, a large-scale exhibition featuring aluminum was held at the now-defunct art space "TOLOT / heuristic" in Shinonome, Tokyo. The exhibition was held at the now-defunct Tokyo Shinonome art space "TOLOT / heuristic" in 2018, and featured a large-scale exhibition on the theme of future natural landscapes featuring aluminum, using a spacious 400 tsubo space to exhibit and present a variety of installations ranging from two-dimensional works to three-dimensional, video, live music and more.

-After the Corona Disaster and the release of "SUN," did you feel any change in your own activities or creative motivation?

I strongly feel a return to the origin, or rather, a return to nature. I feel that I have been creating my own works and worldview through graphic expression, especially through my devotion to digital technology, but I feel that this is a reaction to that, or perhaps I want to look at a different landscape.

SUN (2020-)"
The Corona Disaster began in 2020. An art project that originated in 365 digital images that YOSHIROTTEN began producing in early 2008. It is one of YOSHIROTTEN's representative works in recent years, and is still ongoing, with an art installation of the same project to be held in 2024 at "Fukuoka PayPay Dome". The project is still ongoing, with an art installation scheduled to be held at the Fukuoka PayPay Dome in 2024.

-Without fear of being misunderstood, there was also a sense of having done it all.

Of course, there are still many possibilities and areas I would like to challenge, so I cannot say that I have done all I can do, but I would like to look back on the path I have taken. I think I was in such a phase. However, things I want to do keep bubbling up without time to look back, so in the end, I will keep making things, probably for a long time.

-This feeling led to "Radical Graphics Bio" at Ginza Graphic Gallery, and then to "FUTURE NATURE Ⅱ in Kagoshima". Now that you have completed each exhibition, can you tell us again about your future plans?

There are still many projects I would like to do, I would like to present my works overseas, and I have an infinite number of ideas. However, while continuing with the same attitude as before, I am beginning to think that it would be great if I could do more interesting things here on earth that make use of my activities. I would like to create new tourist attractions. I believe that design is a means of communication and problem solving, and art is about imagination, giving awareness, and exploring oneself, so I would like to continue my activities on both axes.
