Even though it’s a chair, it somehow feels like a waste to sit on it. But of course, you’re welcome to sit on it. This October, the “Dice Chair”—designed by Taro Okamoto about 70 years ago—will go on sale again for the first time in about five years.

The “Dice Chair” was created in 1957. Taro Okamoto visited the Yamakawa Rattan Factory with Toshiko Okamoto, and the design he created on the spot was later commercialized.
With a cubic form reminiscent of a die and the free-flowing curves of rattan, this product is the result of the artisan’s skill—shaping each of the six sides one by one and assembling a complex structure while carefully assessing the properties of the rattan.
Although it had once disappeared from the market, it was officially reissued in 2011 as part of the “TARO100 Festival,” held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Taro Okamoto’s birth. Production continued after that, but in 2021, the product was discontinued after the company lost its production facility due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
About five years have passed since then. In response to requests for a re-release, we established a new production facility and manufacturing system, making this reissue a reality. Once again, under the supervision and guidance of Yuzuru Yamakawa, artisans are crafting each chair by hand.
Even though this design was created nearly 70 years ago, it still feels strangely fresh today. Perhaps that is precisely what makes Taro Okamoto’s designs so fascinating.
The “Dice Chair” is a piece that, when placed in a room, serves as both a chair and a small work of art. Rather than simply buying a piece of furniture, it’s like adding a touch of Taro Okamoto’s “playfulness” to your daily life. That kind of choice sounds like a lot of fun, too.
