So, What is NEW VINTAGE? Vol.81 A techie vest that makes you want to murmur, "This is just fine.

In the 1990s, the term "vintage" was used to describe vintage clothing that did not meet the definition of "antique," but still had value, as opposed to "antique" clothing that was 100 years old. Nowadays, there is a movement to find new value in "new vintage," even in old clothes from the 1980s onward, which used to be called "regular" vintage clothes. In this project, four vintage clothing stores with different styles propose new ways to enjoy vintage clothing. Each of them will talk about the charm of vintage clothing with their own sense of style.

With all the new stores, this Series is finally in its 11th season! The 81st edition of this series, which will be the top-runner, will be presented by Mr. Dai Harada of "MOANINʼSTORE", a new face in Sakurajosui. What new vintage items will he introduce?

-Do you find any difference in the items you select and the atmosphere compared to a vintage clothing store?

I think it's probably different. First of all, the way we value "old things" is the same. No matter how old the vintage item is, I have a sense that "if I can't wear it in style now, what's the point? So I try to be flexible and have items that can adapt to the ever-changing vibes and moods of the world.

-I ask you with that premise in mind. What is the New Vintage to you?

Nowadays, it is something that can be obtained without having to pay a lot of money or work hard to find it, and that will remain in one's memory when one looks back on it 10 or 15 years from now and says, "Oh, by the way, that might have been fun. I think it is a good idea to have a product that is not valuable like old clothes. If you want to "sell used clothes" that have no value as used clothes, then the quality level of the item itself is important. For example, I like items that have recently been mentioned under the keyword "Y2K," but there are many items that will not become "used clothes" in the future. Therefore, I think it is necessary to be discerning about such items.

-The items introduced here have cleared that hurdle as well, don't they?

So, we have prepared the following vest. This is an original brand called "CANYON RIVER BLUES," which was originally developed in the U.S. department stores "Sears" and "Kmart" (a discount store). It is a so-called "store brand. Apparently, the brand already existed in the 1980s, and from the official websites of both companies, it seems that the brand is still in existence. It appears frequently in secondhand clothing, so there may be a surprisingly large number of people who remember seeing the brand.

-Mr. Shigemitsu of "Early20" (Early20) previously introduced mall-based brands of the 00sI was doing it, but it seems to be close to that in terms of groove.

I guess. In my case, when I started the store, I wanted to "compete with regular items," and from that perspective, I thought, "There must be items from the 00s that can join the vintage clothing category," and in the process of digging up more items, this brand caught my eye. The vests introduced here are from the early 2000s, and it is interesting to note that there are a few items that incorporate outdoor taste and tech details that were made around the same time.

-That's exactly what this is.

The key points are the pockets designed on the front chest and abdomen. The abdomen has darted and three-dimensionally molded flap pockets on both sides. When the chest pocket is opened, pockets are placed inside as well, and the chest patch and zip puller made of clear rubber material are in the Y2K mood. Pockets are also designed on the back.

-What kind of use is this pocket intended for?

Hey, what is it for? (Laughs). Pockets on the back waist are often seen in cycling wear. You know, the kind of pockets you might use to store food or drink bottles. I thought it might be the same thing, but the flap is in the way, and it looks like it would be difficult to take out the luggage while driving. ...... So, to be honest, I see it as just a gimmick (laughs). I can't say whether it's necessary or not, but I give it enough points for being a toy, or for being stealthy and simply fun.

-The response from the younger generation of tech archivists and gop-core lovers seems to be good.

Well, personally, I feel that techie items made by outdoor and sports brands are a bit over-spec. Of course, I can understand why they are cool, but I think they are a bit too pretentious to wear on the street. Rather, we would rather imitate the authentic items of such top brands and wear items that have just the atmosphere of the authentic items as fashion, which is the kind of tension we are looking for right now. Of course, as a store brand, the items are mass-produced, but the production itself is solid.

-You mentioned earlier that you are finding glimpses of it in the used clothing market, but is that an ongoing process?

When I started buying used clothes, you could usually find them around here, but recently it seems to be getting harder and harder to find them. In terms of items, the image of flannel shirts, denim jackets, and denim pants is strong, and many people are surprisingly unaware of shell-type items like this, so it's a good target. Moreover, this vest can be used as an outerwear or a middle layer, and can be worn in a gimmicky way to create a good atmosphere. I ride a bicycle, and this vest will be useful for that as well.

-It is a functional but "fashionable" garment.

Yes, I do. My store is not a specialty store for outdoor wear or sportswear, but rather a small clothing store. One thing to keep in mind is that Canyon River Blues, like other brands, has its good and bad points depending on its age. If you can find the right one, it will be very interesting, so please try to find it.
