Choosing outerwear that prioritizes style over functionality.
—This time, Homare selected five of her go-to outerwear pieces. Do you have any personal criteria when choosing outerwear?
Homare: I want to wear my favorite clothes whether I'm outdoors or indoors, so I absolutely won't compromise when it comes to choosing outerwear—and I won't wear thick coats just because it's cold. The five pieces I brought today are the ones I've carefully handpicked.
—That’s true; there are definitely quite a few lightweight outerwear pieces overall. Well, let’s go through them one by one. First up is the only long-length coat. Which one is it?
Homare: This is a trench coat I bought at a thrift store. It’s from a long-established American fashion brand with roots in military wear, so you can trust the quality.
〈London Fog〉 Trench Coat
I was lucky enough to find and buy this piece—it’s in great condition and, unusually for vintage clothing, features dropped shoulders and a oversized fit. I love layering it under my coat. The great thing about trench coats is that they give you just the right amount of a put-together look, don’t they? I like to button it up to create a more streamlined look. Also, since I want to wear it with a more modern vibe, I’ve removed the epaulets.
—It looks like you're dressed a bit lightly for the middle of winter. Will this be enough to get you through?
Homare: Actually, I’m pretty sensitive to the cold, but if I layer up, I can handle it surprisingly well (lol). Also, I do wear gloves in the dead of winter, of course.
—Next up is a trio of bomber jackets. First, please tell us what you like most about the duck bomber jacket from 〈Stein (ssstein)〉.
Homare: The silhouette is just perfect when you wear it. It looks amazing from every angle—360 degrees! Plus, since it’s simple and free of unnecessary embellishments, the coolness of the sulfur-dyed finish really stands out.
〈Stein〉 Duck Blouson
—It looks like it’ll develop a nice patina as the color fades with wear.
Homare: Since it’s been washed repeatedly after the sulfur dyeing process, it has a cool, vintage vibe that makes it look like vintage clothing at first glance—and it’s great that I can look forward to watching it develop its own character over time. I used to love vintage clothes and wore them all the time, but at some point I just thought, “This doesn’t really suit me” (laughs). So now I wear clothes that have a vintage vibe but with a modern twist.
—This jacket really captures that vibe. Do you have any specific preferences when it comes to choosing the right size for outerwear?
Homare: Since 〈Stein〉 has a roomy fit, many people choose size S, but I deliberately went with the slightly larger size M. I like the look of women wearing men’s sizes for a relaxed fit, so I wanted to go for that vibe. Next up is 〈Nomàt〉, another brand I love because many of its pieces have a gender-neutral feel.
"Nomat" Blouson
—This really stands out for its simplicity and high quality.
Homare: At first glance, it looks ordinary, but it’s actually very thoughtfully designed. I’d never even picked up a simple zip-up jacket before, but this one really caught my eye. Plus, the fact that the photoshoot was shot by my favorite French photographer, Cécile Boltretti, felt like fate.
The design has a military and workwear vibe, but it also features the delicate lines characteristic of a female designer—the balance is exquisite and really cool. Plus, since it’s simple, it goes well with any outfit, and it’s easy to just throw on, making it very practical.
—Next, let’s move on to the vintage leather MA-1 jacket. What drew you to it?
〈Giorgio Armani〉 Leather MA-1
Homare: First of all, this deep green is so understated and cool! It’s a vintage piece from the ’90s, and I really love the short length that’s so characteristic of that era. I’m impressed by how compact it is—it makes me want to pair it with wide-leg slacks—and by how well-made the lining is.
Not only does it look great, but it’s also made of soft, supple lamb leather, making it incredibly comfortable to wear.
—How would you style it?
Homare: Wear a plain black sweater with wide-leg slacks, throw this jacket on, and button it all the way up in the front. A simple look is the coolest.
—And finally, the down jacket from . It’s the only true outerwear piece here.
〈Rotoru〉 Down Jacket
Homare: To be honest, I’d been avoiding down jackets until now. This one came out about a year ago, but I kept hesitating—and I finally got it this year. I like that the brand logo and tags aren’t too flashy, so at first glance, you can’t tell which brand it is.
Plus, it’s super lightweight, and it’s warm enough that a long-sleeve T-shirt is all you need underneath. I also like the design with the voluminous collar. It has more of an international brand vibe than a tech-y one.
—The lineup included both trendy brands of the moment and vintage pieces—it was very much in Homare’s style.
Homare: I have about 30 outerwear pieces, but from among them, I chose the ones I feel I’ll be wearing for a long time to come. I think I’ll continue to love these pieces even as I get older and my fashion tastes change.
