This photo shoot and interview took place in a neighborhood that holds special memories for Yamamoto and retains the charm of old Tokyo. The tailored jacket is an unbranded piece I received from a stylist friend four or five years ago. Even though it’s a jacket, Yamamoto prefers a casual look, so this was the perfect fit for him—with just the right proportions and a fabric that resists wrinkles.
"I just love brown clothes. That's why my jacket is brown, too."
Mr. Yamamoto’s wardrobe doesn’t include any classic black or navy tailored jackets; even the other tailored jacket he owns—which he bought at a vintage shop in Germany—is brown. He says that if he were to buy another one, he’d choose brown again. Beyond simply being his favorite color, a brown jacket is like a versatile staple for Mr. Yamamoto, suitable for both formal and casual occasions.
“(As for why I wear a jacket), I guess part of it is just to make things easier on myself. Don’t you feel like if you’re wearing a jacket, you can somehow get by even if you’re running late that day? So, honestly, a T-shirt would be fine underneath, but since we’re shooting today, I put on a shirt too to look a little more put-together (laughs).”
He wears a pin of a man playing tennis and a gas station logo pin on his jacket. He bought both at a vintage clothing store in Hokkaido while on a business trip. He also hangs keychains and other trinkets from his jeans—a personal rule of Mr. Yamamoto’s, who says, “To me, pins and keychains are like good-luck charms.”
For Mr. Yamamoto, whose job often takes him overseas and to rural areas, exploring local vintage clothing stores and antique shops is one of his life’s passions. Yamamoto’s philosophy is that when it comes to jackets, he prefers to find vintage pieces where the fit and fabric suit his personal taste, rather than buying brand-new ones. Of course, he understands the merits of brand-name and designer items, but he believes it’s important not to get too caught up in that and to choose clothes that feel right on him.
"I love clothes, but I'm not great at putting outfits together. Jackets make me look good, and they're so convenient with all those pockets. Now that I think about it, I sound like I just want to take the easy way out—is that okay? (laughs)"
Watching Mr. Yamamoto chatting happily in this charming café, it’s clear that even when he wears a tailored jacket—which can often look stiff—he still manages to exude a relaxed and mellow vibe. This isn’t just a matter of how he styles his clothes; it’s because his personality is reflected in his style as well.
