“I decided to try my hand at a deliberately mismatched look,” said Leo Yoshioka, who worked as a buyer for a select shop before becoming a freelancer active in a wide range of fields. Feeling a sense of dissonance between his words and the seemingly perfectly calculated outfit before me, I decided to start by exploring the meaning behind his statement.
"Personally, I think the coolest way to wear a suit—even if it’s just a jacket—is to tie it up neatly and put it on right. I basically think anything else just doesn’t work. So, since it doesn’t work anyway, I figured I might as well go all out and try pairing it with something completely mismatched—which is why I’m wearing this. For the inner layer, I’m wearing a thick checkered shirt from —and I’m not even tucking it in."
So why does it fit so perfectly? The secret really was in the setup.
"This outfit is a custom suit from Wisdom Tool. I actually own quite a few suits, but I realized I hadn’t worn a double-breasted one in quite a while, so I had this one made last fall. I just fell in love with this bird’s-eye fabric."
The vintage dragonfly brooch glimmers at her neckline. Dragonflies can only move forward, which is why they have long been cherished as auspicious “victory insects.” “That’s exactly what I love about them,” says Ms. Yoshioka.
He went on to say this about the details and sizing as well.
"It has a classic six-button front, but by omitting the cuff buttons and making the pants slightly wider, I aimed to create a suit that evokes the vibe of vintage Armani or Pierre Cardin while still being subtly ageless."
Having handled countless jacket sets, Mr. Yoshioka has developed an extraordinary attention to detail and a firm set of personal principles. When I asked him at the end how he goes about choosing clothes, his response reflected his characteristic approach—one that places great importance on meeting people and building relationships.
"Rather than the location, I tend to choose what to wear based on who I'm meeting. I think things like, 'They'll be happy if I wear this,' or, 'It's a pretty niche detail, but that person will probably notice this little touch.' As for locations, when I go to an art museum, I go for a sharp suit. Wearing a sharp suit and a short-brimmed hat while gazing at paintings… that’s the kind of retirement I’d like to have.”
Unlike single-breasted jackets, double-breasted jackets tend to lose their shape when the buttons are undone. To prevent this, Mr. Yoshioka adds “pull buttons,” ensuring that the jacket always looks its best.
