STRATEGY OF BEAMS

A new book on BEAMS, edited with director Motoki Yoshikawa. Chapter 2: "Four Thousand Heads: Takunori Tsuzuki and Intergenerational Fashion

BEAMS will establish the seasonal theme of "URBAN ACTIVITY LABO" for the fall/winter 2022 season. How should we go about capturing the wide variety of clothes created from the "imaginary laboratory for urban activities"? We explore how with Motoki Yoshikawa, director of the men's casual department.
This time, Takunori Tsuzuki, the fashion monster of the comedy world with 4000 heads, is self-styling the October items for BEAMS. The two men, who are about 20 years apart in age, discuss their views on fashion.

You can tell that they enjoy styling fashion.

Have you ever shopped at BEAMS?

Tsuzuki: Of course, I go there often. They have a wide range of clothes.

Yoshikawa: Thank you very much!

Tsuzuki: Fast fashion was our gateway, so we went to "BEAMS" when we wanted to move up to the next level. When we took the next step up, we would go to BEAMS. In high school, if you had a piece of clothing from BEAMS, people would say, "You have nice clothes!

Yoshikawa: I am very happy. We are a casual label in the middle of men's casual wear, and for the past five years we have had a strong street feel, but now we have returned to an authentic feel, and things are changing with the times.

This season you have a seasonal theme called "Urban Activity Labo".

Yoshikawa: That's right. The main axis is American casual, which becomes sporty or formal depending on the season, but this season has a stronger American casual color, with an essence of the outdoors. I refer to the mood of Patagonia and The North Face, which were born in the 70's and advanced in design and functionality in the 90's. I think this season's American casual is more American casual.

Tsuzuki: Somehow, I felt that kind of mood.

〈Wild Things × Beams〉Blouson ¥33,000

Yoshikawa: This [Wild Things] jacket also exploded at BEAMS in the late 1990s. It was reversible, and the staff absolutely had to have one. I wasn't at BEAMS yet, but I bought one back then. I wasn't at BEAMS yet, but I bought it back then, and now I'm offering it again in a more modern sizing. I styled it with a sweatshirt set-up, for example.

Tsuzuki: This sweatshirt set-up is roomy in a good way.

Yoshikawa: But I have adjusted the sizing so that I can wear it outside.

We asked Mr. Tsuzuki to style two items for us this time. Please explain the coordination of each item.

ITEM 1. car coat

Car coat tailored in soft sheep leather with classic details reminiscent of the good old days of the 50's and 60's in the U.S., but arranged in a shorter length for easy everyday use. The moderate volume adds a strong statement to your coordination. The aging process gives it a slightly worn-in look, which is also a nice feature.

Car Coach Jacket ¥49,500

Tsuzuki: The styling of this car coat first came to mind. I like that it is made of leather and has an aged finish. I wanted to wear it casually without being eccentric, so I paired it with a mesh T-shirt, a checked shirt, and a jersey bottom. It's like a quick throw-on when you go to the convenience store or supermarket. I also felt the American feel of the 90's, so I turned up the collar a bit and played with the details to incorporate the atmosphere of that time.

Yoshikawa: When we work together, the styling tends to be a bit more masculine, but I like the way the jerseys are combined with the hard impression of the leather to moderately remove it. I thought it was a well-balanced mix of masculine and casual.

Tsuzuki: Yes, we did. I also thought about styling it in a masculine way. I thought I would wear denim with it.

Yoshikawa: But the jersey is unique in the way it is worn with the pants. Track pants like this are very popular right now.

Tsuzuki: When I saw the car coat in the photo, I thought it would be longer, but when I looked at the actual garment, it was about waist-length, so I decided to pull it off with a jersey. I wanted the top to be tight and the bottom relaxed. And since jerseys have a clean silhouette, I thought the vertical lines would stand out.

The processing of this car coat is not too much, but just right.

Yoshikawa: I was very careful about that. I wanted it to look a little worn and blend immediately with the clothes in my wardrobe.

Tsuzuki: It's a blue and brown checked shirt, and I matched the colors with the dark brownish color of the leather to see if it would match, and I used the pattern as an accent. Also, the leather is soft and the silhouette fits well.

Yoshikawa: The sheepskin leather is soft, so it is also calculated to fit the wearer's body shape.

How about a coordinated cardigan?

ITEM 2: Shaggy cardigan

A knit cardigan with a solid thickness. The raising process gives it a fluffy feel, and the finish gives it a sense of fullness. The silhouette also has a voluminous size feel with shoulders dropped and a body width that does not make the wearer feel inadequate. The coloring is also appealing in a way that is not often seen. The coloring is good, and it will play an active role as a mainstay of your coordination.

Beams 7-gauge solid shaggy cardigan ¥13,200

Tsuzuki: I gave this a lot of thought. I thought about using it as an inner layer, but I dared to wear it as an outer layer. It is a very basic item, but it has a seasonal feel with its fluffiness and color, so I thought it would be nice to make the most of that.

Yoshikawa: That's what I'm talking about.

Tsuzuki: The jacket I am wearing inside is slim and has no shoulder pads, so I thought it would be interesting to use it as an inner layer. I thought it would be interesting to use it as an inner layer, so I styled it as if I were assembling it from there.

What do you mean by "assembling"?

Tsuzuki: The jacket has a gentlemanly mood, so I dared to neutralize it with a skirt. The skirt neutralizes the jacket's gentlemanly mood, so I decided to use a skirt to neutralize it, and boots to tighten it up.

Yoshikawa: Sunglasses are also on point.

Tsuzuki: This is also to add a masculine element. Cardigans are usually worn with T-shirts and denim, but I wanted to try something a little different.

Yoshikawa: Even though the skirt is a high-impact item, it is amazing how the other items neutralize the impact of the skirt and make it work as a coordinated look. I can tell that you really enjoy styling fashion.

Cardigans are an item that has grown tremendously in the past few years. Because they are basic, it is good to offer unique styling suggestions like Ms. Tsuzuki's.

Yoshikawa: That's right. Even in secondhand clothing, the price of such items with a raised feel has skyrocketed.

Tsuzuki: I can't afford used clothes anymore...(smiles).

Yoshikawa: Since black and gray are the most common colors in used clothing, items with good coloring like this can be hard to find even in used clothing stores. It is also hard to find items with a good size balance.

Tsuzuki: The size of this item is very good. I think it hits the point where it is hard to find something that looks like it could be had, but it is not.

Yoshikawa: Even if you try to imitate vintage clothing, it will never be as good as secondhand clothing, so I try to make clothes that have an advantage not found there. I try to make clothes that have an advantage over vintage clothes. I think it is our job to make things that people say, "That doesn't seem to exist.
