A new book on the dismantling of BEAMS, edited with director Motoki Yoshikawa. Chapter 6: "A Look Back at Y2K Culture with Naotake Magara

Fashion in the 2000s is once again on the rise. This season's BEAMS collection is also based on the theme of "Y2K" and focuses on the culture of the 2000s, which emerged after the 1990s. What kind of behind-the-scenes stories can be found in the clothes that have been created in this way? Together with Motoki Yoshikawa, director of the men's casual department, we explore the strategies for this season's original items.
Our guest this time is Mr. Naotake Magara of "A-1 CLOTHING", who has long been a leader of the Harajuku fashion and street scene, and will discuss the culture of the 2000s that emerged after the 90s, looking back on those days and digging deeper into this season's "BEAMS" items.

Anyway, the size is good. The balance is well arranged.

The items released in May have a strong American casual look.

Yoshikawa:. Yes, it is. This time around, we are strongly reflecting the "BEAMS" style. The lineup is characterized by a strong emphasis on our strongest elements, such as work, sports, and military wear.

Now, please introduce each item.

Yoshikawa:The shirt worn by Mr. Magara is based on a European pajama shirt. . I think you can find items like this in vintage clothing here and there.

Makara:When I tried it on, it was amazingly fresh. I don't usually wear this kind of clothes. . but it was easy to wear even though it was patterned.

Yoshikawa:It looked really good on me. . I thought it looked even more sexy when worn by an adult.

ITEM 1

. The combination with the track pants was also very 2000's.

Makara:I know the style of track jackets and pants was popular in Europe.

Yoshikawa:Jamiroquai and others were also wearing set-ups, and I have an image that such styles were popular from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.

The size of the shirt was also good.

Yoshikawa:The designer is conscious of the modern silhouette and adjusts the balance by loosening the width of the body and widening the armholes. . The patterns are sampled from vintage clothing, and the designers further tweak and update them as original patterns.

Is the fabric also unique?

Yoshikawa:Many vintage pajama shirts are made of rayon, but it is a difficult material to handle, so our original items are made of polyester. So we use polyester for our original items. It looks like rayon, but it is easy to care for.

ITEM2

mesh pants ¥11,000

. Then, mesh track pants, right?

Yoshikawa:. This item is made of mesh material so that it is easy to wear even in high temperatures. It is like a longer version of basketball shorts. However, the mesh material alone is see-through, so we lined them with a lining.

. This one is also self-coordinated by Ms. Magara.

Makara:. A long version of the bath pants is something new.

The silhouette of the fabric is interesting, too.

Yoshikawa:The fabrics reflect the "Y2K" theme, don't they? It is one of the symbolic items of this season. Mr. Magara, you were wearing one hem up. I thought that was cool. I felt the culture of music.

Makara:Yes, I remember that from a little before 2000, all the members of the Wu-Tang (Clan) wore their pants with only one leg up.

Yoshikawa:You don't usually wear pants like these, do you? That's why I felt it was very fresh. . It was also cool that he wore vintage coveralls with them.

Makara:You know those sports pants with lots of snap buttons on the side? If you used to wear those pants, I think this will stick to you a lot.

. Next is the cardigan.

Yoshikawa:Following the recent cardigan boom this season, this is a piece arranged for spring and summer. It is knitted with high-twisted yarn, so it is crisp to the touch and feels great against the skin. Although it is getting warmer during the daytime, I think these items will come in handy when the mornings and evenings get cold.

Makara:This pattern looks traditional. It would look good with a hunting cap or something.

Yoshikawa:It's not quite 50's, but it represents a slightly masculine pattern. I think it would not be out of place even if worn by an adult like Mr. Magara.

Now, how about this short-sleeved sweatshirt?

Yoshikawa:. This is also inspired by vintage clothing, but with a modern size balance. The graphics are also original designs created by the designer from scratch, using vintage clothing as a reference.

Makara:In the past, there were people who cut off the sleeves of their "Champion" sweatshirts (to adjust the size), weren't there? . If it is the current version, it is good because the size has already been adjusted.

Yoshikawa:. Thank you very much. It is difficult to find a size that fits you in vintage clothing, so I would be happy if you could come to BEAMS and let people know that they can find such easy-to-wear items.

He said it's a sweatshirt connection,Champion's vestis also made to order. . While keeping the reverse weave design firmly in place, the shallow V gives it a classy look. Layering with a T-shirt at the chest area can also be expressed here, and color coordination can also be enjoyed.

Lastly, how about these cargo pants?

Yoshikawa:This is already a standard item. As a feature, it usually has 6 pockets, but we also added small pockets on both sides of the waist and inside the cargo pockets, for a total of 10 pockets.

Is there a reason for that?

Yoshikawa:It's a very personal thing, but I think it looks more manly if the pockets are on both sides of the hips, at an angle when you put your hands in them. Also, cargo pockets are large, but if you put something in them, it might get in the way when you walk. So we added small pockets to make them fit better, and also to make it easier to organize luggage.

Makara:. it's nice to have lots of pockets.

. - It could also be used for a night out.

Yoshikawa:You want to go to a club empty-handed, don't you? It's convenient for that kind of thing. Military pants are tough, and you don't have to worry about getting them dirty. Especially when going to outdoor parties, these items are useful.

Makara:I wear cargo pants a lot myself. They are a real staple.

Yoshikawa:They also have belt loops, but they can be worn like easy pants since the drawcord is attached on the inside. . Originally, this item had an adjuster on the side, but we eliminated it. . I would be happy if you could see this as a modern update.

What did you think when you saw all the items?

Makara:. Anyway, the size is good. I felt that the balance of the garments when worn together was well balanced. It is well thought out for layering and for wearing alone, and I felt that it creates a silhouette that is very current.

In the 2000s, I used to go overseas to buy and pick up clothes in very large sizes, like 2XL. When I think about it now, I wonder why I was wearing such big clothes (laughs). When I think back to those days, I still think I have a good size balance.

You have coordinated two items this time, but were there any other items you were interested in?

Makara:I guess I would have to say cargo pants. They can be worn with anything, and they are really easy to use.

Yoshikawa:I often wear cargo pants myself, and they can be worn with a T-shirt or a blazer. They are versatile enough to be worn with both casual and traditional outfits.
