A new book on the dismantling of BEAMS, edited with director Motoki Yoshikawa. Chapter 6: "A Look Back at Y2K Culture with Naotake Magara

Fashion in the 2000s is once again on the rise. This season's BEAMS collection is also based on the theme of "Y2K" and focuses on the culture of the 2000s, which emerged after the 1990s. What kind of behind-the-scenes stories can be found in the clothes that have been created in this way? Together with Motoki Yoshikawa, director of the men's casual department, we explore the strategies for this season's original items.
Our guest this time is Mr. Naotake Magara of "A-1 CLOTHING", who has long been a leader of the Harajuku fashion and street scene, and will discuss the culture of the 2000s that emerged after the 90s, looking back on those days and digging deeper into this season's "BEAMS" items.

I hope you continue to surprise me in a good way.

Through this interview, did your impression of BEAMS change?

Makara:. I got the impression that there are things that have been carried through from the past, and they are firmly protecting what is important. In that sense, I did not feel any change. However, I felt that they have brushed up their skills in a modern way, and I thought that their sense of balance was very good. I was impressed by their sense of balance.

Yoshikawa:I am very happy to hear you say that, Mr. Magara.

Lastly, what are your expectations for BEAMS?

Makara:I think you continue to transmit a variety of things, and that raises expectations. So, I hope that you will continue to surprise us in a good way through fashion and various other aspects of culture.

I was impressed once again by his deep knowledge of various cultures, not only fashion, but also music and so on. . I honestly felt that I would like to talk about such things with him all the time, without talking about work (laughs). Next month is the time of year when the temperature is rising, and we have a lineup of items for the summer season.
