In the 1990s, the term "vintage" was used to describe vintage clothing that did not meet the definition of "antique," but was still valuable. Nowadays, there is a movement to find new value in "new vintage," even in old clothes from the 1980s onward, which were called "regular" at the time. In this project, four vintage clothing stores with different styles propose new ways to enjoy vintage clothing. Each of them will talk about the charm of vintage clothing with their own sense of style.

All the stores have been replaced, and we are in the second half of the 10th season that started! The 78th issue of "mellow" is the second round of Mr. Takayasu Shimizu's "mellow" show. Now, what new vintages will he introduce!

-Please tell us about the new vintage items you are going to introduce!

This time, we would like to focus on Remington.

-Is that the famous shotgun or rifle?

Yes, it is. According to Wikipedia, it was founded in 1816 and is the oldest privately owned firearms manufacturer in the United States. Although the company has been acquired frequently, it is one of the world's leading manufacturers of firearms, with the largest sales growth in the hunting shotgun category in the region. We thought it would be interesting to see the hunting apparel that the company offers.

. - I think this is a bit unusual compared to Beretta and Smith & Wesson, which are also firearms manufacturers, but whose apparel is sometimes seen.

Yes, they are. Even if one were to purchase a new jacket, it is not something that the general public has access to in Japan, since it is only gun stores and military stores that use them. However, from a vintage clothing point of view, when oiled jackets by "Babur" (Barbour) became popular in the mid-1990s, some of my seniors in the vintage clothing industry who "didn't want to be seen with others" were wearing "Remington" jackets they had found in the United States. It seems that Remington was well known in Japan as well. After hearing this story from my senpai, I became curious, and as a result, I found these two pieces of Remington clothing.

-. If it is said to be a new product of some street brand, it seems to be so. . at a glance, it looks very current.

Both are a strain of hunting camo used for hunting , called real tree camo. The monotone version is a snow tree camo designed to be worn in the snowy mountains. The logo mark hidden in the pattern indicates that the fabric is made by " NEXT CAMO. The other fabric is made by NATURAL GEAR. This is a standard camo fabric called "Original Natural" that can be used in forests, swamps, and even deserts, making it highly versatile. Realtree camo itself is known for its high popularity on the streets, with Supreme and Stussy also releasing it. The Snow Tree Camo, a derivative of the Realtree Camo, has also been used by "GREGORY" for its bags.

-What do you find interesting in terms of the details of the items?

The construction of both is basically the same, with zip pockets on both chests and large gusseted flap pockets on either side of the front body. The lining is quilted on the snow camo and mesh on the other. The quilted one is quite warm when you put it on, and this is probably the difference depending on the season you wear it. Similarly, the textures of the fabric surfaces are a bit different. The latter has a slightly raised feel, a bit like L.L. Bean's Chamois cloth.

-Are there any other differences?

The snow tree one has an integrated hood, while the other has a detachable hood. As for the age, according to the experience of our predecessors, most of Remington's designs in this area are from the 1990s. The history itself is long, but I think it's safe to say that most of the items you can find in secondhand stores are from the 1990s. However, the number of items is small to begin with, and the appearance rate is low. This may be one of the reasons why this item has not attracted much attention yet, and it is a good target from a new vintage point of view.

-Don't many other companies in your industry offer this service?

. Well, I think it's "not yet". As I mentioned earlier, since there is not much demand for them, you can find them on the Internet at a fairly low price. Another important point to consider when looking for one is the size. The majority of the items that come up are XL size, probably due to the fact that they were actually used for hunting. Personally, I recommend wearing these with simple black nylon pants for a rough look. This year, with Realtree camo at the top of the list, there are a lot of people looking for hunting camo items instead of military items, so I think this is the perfect place to aim for something that people haven't yet paid attention to.
