The sweatshirt made of knitted cotton became a household name when coaches at the "University of Michigan" stocked them as training wear. This was exactly 100 years ago. At the time, the only color available for this essential American casual wear was a mokuro-gray.
The subtle, wooden gray color that appears throughout is reminiscent of the sweatshirts of that era, but the texture is infinitely more supple. The oversized silhouette, dropped armholes with wide sleeves, ribbed crew neck, cuffs, and hem combine to create a blissfully comfortable fit.
Elegance is added by the words "Christian Dior Couture" embroidered on the chest. The small white threads on the front of the dress could be easily blended in with the wooden frame. It is a subtle touch that is typical of Kim Jones, who has created a new style by fusing luxury and street fashion.
Kim, who has been the creative director of DIOR for the past six years, is aiming to establish a timeless style by destroying and reconstructing traditions to sum up the past. It may sound clichéd in words, but it's sure to knock you to your knees when you hold one of his sweatshirts in your hands.
