A new book on BEAMS, edited with director Motoki Yoshikawa. Chapter 2: "Four Thousand Heads: Takunori Tsuzuki and Intergenerational Fashion

BEAMS will establish the seasonal theme of "URBAN ACTIVITY LABO" for the fall/winter 2022 season. How should we go about capturing the wide variety of clothes created from the "imaginary laboratory for urban activities"? We explore how with Motoki Yoshikawa, director of the men's casual department.
This time, Takunori Tsuzuki, the fashion monster of the comedy world with 4000 heads, is self-styling the October items for BEAMS. The two men, who are about 20 years apart in age, discuss their views on fashion.

I want to enjoy wearing different clothes while I am young.

What did you think when you saw Mr. Tsuzuki's two styling styles?

Yoshikawa: We tend to think in terms of staples based on our past experience and trends, but Mr. Tsuzuki broke down that idea and gave us a new idea. But Mr. Tsuzuki broke it down nicely, or rather, gave us new ideas. I love the fact that he was able to make the outfits work without cluttering them up.

Tsuzuki: Thank you very much! The clothes at BEAMS are very easy to coordinate. Whether or not they can be used on a daily basis ultimately depends on the size of the garment. To be honest, the design and quality can be adjusted by coordinating with other clothes. However, when it comes to the sense of size, a single deviation can lead to a deviation of the whole. In that sense, the clothes from "BEAMS" were very easy to wear.

Yoshikawa: Recently, the size balance required has been changing depending on the age group. People in their 20s tend to wear smaller tops, but there are still people in their 40s who want to wear larger tops in line with the street fashion trend.

Tsuzuki: That's right. I also wear both tight and oversized clothes. But I really like the way you chose soft sheepskin leather for the car coat you mentioned earlier, and the way the material was chosen so that it would fit the body.

Where do you get inspiration for your styling?

Tsuzuki: As with the cardigan styled here, I often pick up a single item and build from there. I also sometimes formulate a vague image of the overall look.

Do you come up with a new look every day rather than rotating your favorite outfits?

Tsuzuki: I sometimes rotate clothes. Actually, I think it would be cool to have a certain number of outfits and rotate among them, but I am more interested in enjoying wearing a variety of clothes while I am young.

Yoshikawa: I now dress like an old man, but when I was young, I tried everything that interested me. I tried on not only vintage clothes but also designer clothes, and I tried on brands that I admired and imitated the brands of my seniors. However, there were things that didn't suit me, and that's how I learned. As you accumulate experience in this way, you learn to choose what you like and what you don't like, what looks good on you and what doesn't. I think this is very important. I think this is very important.

Tsuzuki: I also want to be exposed to as many different things as possible, so I am consciously experimenting with various things.

Yoshikawa: As a result, when I look back at my wardrobe, all I have left are old clothes (laughs).

Tsuzuki: I might be the same way (laughs). I have folded clothes at home, and the ones I wear most often are piled on top. Then, there are a lot of old clothes. Sometimes I pull them out from the bottom and wear clothes I haven't worn in a while (laughs).

Are there any winter items or outfits you are interested in?

Tsuzuki: I would like to play with gloves and other accessories. I also want to buy new knitwear. I don't have a styling in mind yet, but I may look for a theme while watching a movie or something (laughs).

Yoshikawa: From now on, "BEAMS" will gradually increase the number of knitwear with centripetal patterns and cotton outerwear. As Mr. Tsuzuki mentioned, we will also have a full lineup of gloves, scarves, and other accessories, so please look forward to them.

Tsuzuki: Thank you, I'll be sure to check it out. I will go to the store (smile)!
