STRATEGY OF BEAMS

A new book on BEAMS, edited with director Motoki Yoshikawa. Chapter 3: "BerBerJin Fujihara Yutaka and the Interpretation of Originals from the Perspective of Old Clothes" (in Japanese)

BEAMS will establish the seasonal theme of "URBAN ACTIVITY LABO" for the fall/winter 2022 season. How should we go about capturing the wide variety of clothes created from the "imaginary laboratory for urban activities"? We explore how with Motoki Yoshikawa, director of the men's casual department.
This time, Fujihara Yutaka of the vintage store "Berberzine" in Harajuku appears. Some "BEAMS" original items are designed through vintage clothing interpretation. How do these clothes look in the eyes of Mr. Fujiwara, who has seen a lot of vintage wear? We asked him to talk about it with the keyword "vintage clothes" at the center.

I hope we can continue to work together to make Harajuku fashion more exciting.

What did you think of the items at BEAMS?

Fujiwara:I think it would go well with mixed coordination with vintage clothing. It would be easy for someone like me, who usually wears only vintage clothing, to incorporate it into my collection. On the other hand, it would also work well if I coordinate with only "BEAMS" items and mix in only one item of vintage clothing. I think this is a well-balanced lineup that fits well with that kind of vintage clothing mix. I think you have a clear view of the trends of the times.

Are there any items that you particularly liked?

Fujiwara:It's a camo print coat. I have an original one myself, but I wanted to try it on. Now that I am also involved in manufacturing, I am surprised that it is priced in the low 40,000 yen range. It is amazing that it is not only functional, but also fashionably designed.

Yoshikawa:Please show us your original item next time (laughs).

Fujiwara:By all means!

I would like to ask you, Mr. Fujiwara, what are your expectations for "BEAMS" in the future?

Fujiwara:I have been in Harajuku for 25 years, so I have many opportunities to meet people of various generations at BEAMS, and I especially feel a strong desire to enliven fashion and culture among the younger generation. Of course, the same is true in the vintage clothing shop world, and I would like to support them in any way I can. I think "BEAMS" is the source of Harajuku's fashion culture, and since we are backing them up on Tonchan-dori, one street behind them, I would like to work together with them to make Harajuku more exciting. I would be happy if we could continue our relationship for a long time to come.

Yoshikawa:It really is, isn't it? Thank you for your kind words, they really sink in. I hope we can do our best together.

The next chapter will be items for December. Will there be heavy outerwear in the lineup?

Yoshikawa:We have made a new type of down, which is also based on a classic item from the 70's, but updated with a modern interpretation, so please look forward to it.
