So, What is NEW VINTAGE? Vol.79 Inert and ordinary, but that's also how I feel. Carhartt jeans of the "other" type.

In the 1990s, the term "vintage" was used to describe vintage clothing that did not meet the definition of "antique," but still had value, as opposed to "antique" clothing that was 100 years old. Nowadays, there is a movement to find new value in "new vintage," even in old clothes from the 1980s onward, which used to be called "regular" vintage clothes. In this project, four vintage clothing stores with different styles propose new ways to enjoy vintage clothing. Each of them will talk about the charm of vintage clothing with their own sense of style.

The 10th season started with all new stores! The 79th edition is the second round of Yuki Nakamura of "As (US)". What kind of new vintage will he introduce!

Vol.79_Carhartt 5-pocket jeans

-What are the new vintage items that you will be introducing this time?

Carhartt, a staple in the "As (US)" lineup, has prepared a pair of five-pocket jeans. The brand's standard bottoms are the double-knee painted pants that are typical of the work brand, but I think this inert, "normal" look is what we're in the mood for these days.

-It's really quite normal (laughs). Is this an item that is still being developed currently?

Carhartt WIP" is sold in the U.S., but unlike "Carhartt WIP" sold as fashion wear in Japan, this item is sold as work clothes at supermarkets and work goods stores in the U.S. It is available at select import shops here in Japan. Here in Japan, it is available at select import stores.

-I see. Recently, many people don't seem to like the "age" that is the charm of vintage denim, such as the so-called "warafare," or "hige," or "bite," and these shades seem to match today's times.

That's right. The current product is available in two colors, dark stonewash and stonewash, but since these are work clothes, many of them have a flat faded color that is created by wearing them hard and washing them, and although they are inert, they can also be worn cleanly depending on how they are worn. I would like to recommend them to the younger generation as well.

-The thick denim fabric is also full of work taste.

I checked the current model and found that it is 15 ounces, so it has probably not changed. The flat fading is probably due to the use of "cheap and low quality" denim by denim lovers' standards. However, that's why this atmosphere has been created, so the result is all right (laughs). Incidentally, black is also available on rare occasions, so you should buy them as soon as you find them.

-As there are "501" and "550" in , are there various types?

The one introduced earlier is the relaxed fit "B17". There are two types: the traditional fit "B18" and the relaxed fit "B17". The former is similar to the "550" from Levi's (®︎), featuring a relaxed silhouette with room in the thigh and a tapered shape toward the ankle. The other, the traditional fit, is a straight silhouette like the "501". All of the items introduced here seem to be from the 1990s onward, but basically, silhouettes do not seem to change significantly depending on the age. So, when purchasing, you should pay attention to the size description. If you feel that the length is shorter than indicated, there is a big possibility that the garment has been shortened. The silhouette will also change, so be careful.

-What about the detail aspect?

There, as with the silhouette, it is basically unchanged. The front has a zip fly and a coin pocket. The back has stitching on both back pockets and a square leather patch with the C logo engraved on the right pocket. There is a woven brand name on the side of the coin pocket, and there are two types: one with red letters and the other with black letters. In the individual prepared this time, "relaxed fit" had red letters and "traditional fit" had black letters, but the reverse pattern also exists, and it is unknown whether it depends on the time of production or the country, factory, or lot of production.

Similarly, some have triple-stitched center stitching on the back, while others have triple stitching only on the inner thigh seams. Again, it does not seem to be because of the year of manufacture, or because of the country of manufacture. I think that this rough and appropriate feeling is what makes them so American (laughs).

-You mentioned the country of manufacture, are these made in the US?

No, most of the vintage clothing you can find today is made in Mexico. Some of them are made in the U.S., but it seems that older clothes are not necessarily made in the U.S. Therefore, the price is the same for both made in Mexico and made in the U.S. Likewise, we sell both triple-stitched and single-stitched items at the same price.

-I have an image that many of the customers who visit "As" are bikers, skaters, and other people who like rugged American fashion.

We recommend that you go up about 4 inches from your true size and cinch the waist with a belt. There is a stereotype that oversized = childish, but for this item, it is better to wear just the right size (laugh). If you want to balance the tops as well, how about a large crew neck sweatshirt? Although the prices of Carhartt brand items as a whole have skyrocketed, you can still find these items at reasonable prices. Please pick one up.

He is in charge of the press for "US," a select store that handles imported and used clothing with a street-style flavor, focusing on American casual wear, and has gained support from a wide range of customers for his excellent selection of items. At first glance, he appears to be quiet and strong, but in fact he is just a soft-spoken baseball fool.
