Let's go on a trip with tents on our backs. Cheap trip to Hachijojima in spring.

The temperature is rising day by day and the days are gradually getting longer. Many of us must be itching to go on a trip somewhere during this season when just going outside makes us feel relaxed. Pushed by such a mood, we headed for Hachijojima, located in the southern part of the Izu Islands. Our concept for this trip was "keep the cost low, but the experience high. With the rising cost of living and the rising cost of travel, we tried to find a way to enjoy a trip that is reasonably priced and can be enjoyed without strain by devising ways to get around and stay in the island.

Enjoy the spectacular view from the top of the island.

Once we’ve finished setting up the tent, we’ll stop by a supermarket on our bikes to pick up some snacks and drinks. From there, we’ll head straight to the trailhead for Mount Hachijo-Fuji.

Even though it’s an island, the uphill climb was pretty tough. My electric bike was really struggling.

We arrived at the trailhead and set off on our hike.

At 854 meters above sea level, Mount Hachijo-Fuji is the highest peak in the Izu Islands. It’s a beautiful, conical mountain, and the round-trip hike takes about three hours. One of its appeals is that it’s an easy hike that anyone can enjoy.

From the trailhead, there is a series of steep stone steps and slopes.

After climbing to the top, out of breath, I arrived at the crater.

The moment your view suddenly opens up and you feel the vastness of the sky. The suffocating feeling you had just a moment ago slips away.

We decided to stop here for a break and have lunch.

I spread out the island sushi I bought at the supermarket and savored it while taking in the view. Island sushi consists of slightly sweet sushi rice topped with mustard instead of wasabi, and then marinated fish. It’s simple, but it’s the ultimate luxury.

After walking another 15 minutes or so from the crater, you’ll reach the summit.

Below lies a dynamic landscape of sea and islands. Walking around the crater rim is another unique pleasure this mountain has to offer.

On the way back, we also stopped by a ranch halfway up Mount Hachijo-Fuji.

Seeing the cows just relaxing like that is somehow heartwarming.

After coming down the mountain, the group headed to Uramigataki Onsen to wash off the sweat.

This open-air bath offers a view of the waterfall below, allowing you to soak while surrounded by the scent of greenery, the sound of rushing water, and the steam rising from the hot springs. Though it may not be flashy, it offers a gentle, soothing comfort that slowly seeps into your body.

Hot springs are the best. They instantly wash away all the fatigue from hiking. By the way, this hot spring is mixed-gender, so swimsuits are required. Admission is free. What a blessing.
