04: On Cloudsoma Hike
Comfortable whether you're in the city or the mountains.
Fuinam: The fourth pair is 〈On〉’s “Cloudsoma Hike.” The first thing that catches your eye is that, even though it’s an 〈On〉, the holes in the midsole are filled in.
Okajima: When you think of the “On” brand, its signature feature is the perforated midsole, but this model features a design where the midsole appears to be seamless. It’s a pair of shoes that updates the technology designed to provide firm grip on mountain and trail terrain into a more casual hiking shoe.
On "Cloudsoma Hike" ¥23,100 each
Fuinam: Even though it’s called “Haiku,” it has a look that seems perfect for everyday use around town.
Okajima: The original “Cloudsoma” had more of a running shoe vibe, but this version has a thicker tongue, and the upper is designed to strike a balance that makes it comfortable for everyday wear. Even though it’s marketed as a hiking shoe, I think you can wear it just like a sneaker.
Fuinam: The outsole is also a little chunky.
Okajima: The lugs provide excellent traction on the ground. They’re also highly breathable, making them great for the summer hiking season. They’re the kind of shoes you can wear every day and then head straight out into the mountains.
Fuinam: Is “On” Still Popular?
Okajima: The momentum hasn't slowed down, has it? It was originally popular with international visitors, but I get the impression that recently it's been gaining traction among businesspeople in their 40s and 50s as well. Many people wear them with jackets or business attire.
Fuinam: Is it reaching not only young sneaker enthusiasts but also people from slightly older generations?
Okajima: That’s right. The design of the “On” is quite sophisticated, and I think it really conveys how comfortable they are to wear.
